Why there is a gender disparity in su***de:

-Men are significantly less likely to seek help
-Men often deal with emotional pain through destructive behaviours
-Men (40-60) are less likely to have a family/community support system
-Men typically choose a more lethal means of su***de

It's time to do something about these facts.
- Reach out to the men in your life who may be struggling
- Help men connect with the supports they need: before it becomes a crisis
- Let's teach men to regulate their emotions and build habits that foster resilience

What else would you suggest we could do to support men (and women) who are struggling?

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. To mark the occasion, we're looking at common mental health needs for men in Canada.

Why do men wait so long to ask for help?

Canadian studies consistently find that attitudinal barriers (e.g., wanting to handle problems alone) are stronger predictors of not seeking help than practical barriers such as cost or access.

Why wait? Are you powering through, hoping that things will get better with time? Are you downplaying the significance of the issue(s)?

Help is out there. Maybe it's time to reach out.

A lot of men quietly wonder whether therapy would help, or whether it would just mean talking in circles about feelings they would rather avoid. What many discover is that the conversations they resisted most often become the starting point for feeling more present, connected, and mentally clear.

Numbness and peace can look similar from the outside, but they feel very different on the inside. Peace allows a man to stay connected to himself, his relationships, and his emotions without being overwhelmed by them, while numbness often disconnects him from both pain and joy in an effort to simply get through the day. Many men mistake emotional shutdown for strength or calmness, but real peace does not require you to stop feeling.

When your partner asks, “How are you feeling?” do you suddenly feel the urge to talk about literally anything else? Changing the subject often means we as men don’t know how to stay present in a conversation that feels uncomfortable, vulnerable, or unfamiliar.
