When Rashmi Prakash, then a undergraduate engineering student at UBC, signed up for the first ever MMC event in January 2017, she had no idea how it’d affect her life.

Nearly ten years later, Rashmi, who is now a professor, a startup founder, and a respected mentor, says the Access Makeathon was a defining moment for her.

“It was probably one of the core milestone moments of my life that I feel like definitely changed who I became as a person in my career,” she explains.

October is AAC Awareness Month.

AAC, or Augmentative and Alternative Communication, helps people communicate in ways other than spoken speech.

If you've ever seen an AAC device, chances are you've also seen a keyguard, a thin plate that sits on top and helps users hit the right areas on the device.

➡️ If you need a keyguard, request yours through our Device Library or follow steps to create your own: https://ow.ly/Wfu450ZYvgs.

➡️ If you're in Pennsylvania, get yours from Tech OWL - Technology for Our Whole Lives.

Shoutout to Ken Hackbarth (Volksswitch), Bill Binko (ATMakers - Charitable Organization) and Brennen Johnson (OpenSCAD Assistive Forge) for sharing so many keyguard making resources.

We're excited to announce that Erin LeBlanc, AT Specialist and Strategic Collaboration Lead, has been named a guest speaker for AT Exchange Canada on Tuesday, October 27th at the Tech Collider at the BCIT Downtown Campus in Vancouver. Our Solutions and Digital Literacy teams will also be onsite as exhibitors.

The AT Exchange, hosted by TechEdology, is an event focused on advancing the adoption of assistive technologies that empower individuals with disabilities and neuro differences. In bringing the AT community together, we will create an environment for exchanging ideas, knowledge, and innovative solutions.

Erin’s session, “Neil Squire: National Expertise, Local Impact, Trusted Partnerships” will shine a light on the importance of connecting people with the right technology, services and support at the right time.

From education and employment to independent living, Erin will explore how Neil Squire Society supports Canadians with disabilities through:

- Vendor-neutral assistive technology assessments
- Employment support
- Digital skills training
- Makers Making Change
- Hearing health services
- Research and innovation

The session will also look at the practical realities of accessing AT - including funding, accommodations and the services available to help individuals achieve their goals. Because finding the right assistive technology is just one part of the journey. Knowing where to turn for support can make all the difference.

Attendance is free, and lunch and refreshments will be provided.
