Provincial Language Service (PLS), a program of Provincial Health Services Authority, is committed to providing top-quality language services for people who are accessing health care services across B.C. In British Columbia, sign language interpreters and intervenor services for health care are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patients, family members and healthcare providers can reque

st a sign language interpreter and/or intervenor when needed in a healthcare setting. The PLS is responsible for the delivery of sign language interpreting and intervenor services in health care. PLS also provides cross-cultural consultation for patients and staff as well as community engagement and outreach with Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing communities. Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing people have a legal right to interpreters and intervenors at medical appointments, and arranging the interpreter is the responsibility of the health care provider. Patients and family members are not able to book through PLS.

This summer, patients will be able to book language services directly through Provincial Language Services (PLS) using a new process, which is simple, fast, and reliable. As part of this change, PLS will also begin managing ASL interpreting services in-house.

Language services include:
-- Health care interpreting (including ASL)
-- Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART)
-- Intervenor services

What does this mean for patients?
-- A fast and reliable booking process
-- Clear communication and support
-- Consistency and fairness across all language access services

These changes will happen in steps. More details will be shared as they are confirmed.

**For our Deaf‑Blind community, PLS will connect with the Deaf‑Blind Planning Committee to arrange an in-person meeting to discuss the content of this announcement.

One in four people in Canada have a language other than English. Language should never be a barrier to care. Health teams can request interpreting services through Provincial Language Services.

Options include:
☎️ Over-the-phone interpreting in more than 200 languages.
🖥️ Video remote interpreting for patients who communicate in a language other than English or for Deaf or Hard of Hearing patients.
👩‍💻 Virtual visits where an interpreter can join via Teams or Zoom.
🏥 On-site interpreting where an ASL or spoken language interpreter joins a health appointment in person.
With these options, every patient can communicate in a way that works best for them.
