HEU is proud to celebrate Collective Bargaining Rights Day because it marks a significant achievement for our union.

On June 8, 2007, the Supreme Court of Canada established collective bargaining as a charter-protected right for all Canadian workers. This was the direct result of a five-year legal challenge led by HEU and other health unions to fight the BC Liberals' anti-labour legsislation Bill 29.

Thousands of health care workers, mostly women and racialized workers, were fired under Bill 29. It led to the formation of the Living Wage Campaign and a tireless organizing drive to get the privatized support services workers back into the union.

Today, we celebrate that historic Supreme Court victory and recognize the labour movement’s long and proud history of winning important gains at the bargaining table, a legacy that improves the lives of Canadian workers and their families.

Could a Provincial Executive position be in your future?

HEU's independent Ethics Commissioner is hosting candidate training sessions to explain the role of Provincial Executive members, what campaigning involves and the expectations candidates must follow under the HEU Code of Conduct.

Whether you're seriously considering a run or just want to learn more, these sessions are a great place to start. The next training is June 8, with additional sessions available throughout the summer.

Do you skip breaks? Is your workplace sometimes short-staffed? Have you ever been hurt on the job?

Tell us about what you face at work in a new survey about HEU members' working conditions and union representation.

To participate, see the email from Viewpoints Research in your inbox that is set to arrive either today or tomorrow.

It's important we hear about your work in health care – and that you tell us how HEU is doing, too.

June is Filipino Heritage Month in Canada. It is an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the immense and valuable contributions that Filipinos in Canada have made to all aspects of Canadian life.

As a health care union, we also proudly recognize that thousands of HEU members are Filipino or are of Filipino descent, and that they are an active part of our labour movement.

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize Indigenous peoples who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to contribute to our evolving society. This is also a time to honour and uphold the rich achievements, heritage, cultures, traditions, resilience, diversity, and rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada.

It's also a time to reconfirm our commitment to truth, reconciliation and the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission along with the 231 calls to justice outlined in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

As outlined in our strategic plan, we are committed to continuing with the necessary work towards truth and reconciliation within our union and our communities.

HEU acknowledges with gratitude that our members work on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of First Nations who have cared for and nurtured these lands from time immemorial.

HEU acknowledges the inherent rights of First Nations. We also acknowledge the pervasive and ongoing harms of colonialism faced by Indigenous Peoples, including forced removal and dispossession of the land. These harms also include the widespread systemic racism against Indigenous peoples as users, patients, and staff in B.C.’s healthcare system. We are committed to confronting and healing the systemic racism underlying this system in our provision of healthcare services.
