Check Out: Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness

To live in a body both fat and Black is to exist at the margins of a society that creates the conditions for anti-fatness as anti-Blackness. Hyper-policed by state and society, passed over for housing and jobs, and derided and misdiagnosed by medical professionals, fat Black people in the United States are subject to sociopolitically sanctioned discrimination, abuse, condescension, and trauma.

Da’Shaun Harrison--a fat, Black, disabled, and nonbinary trans writer--offers an incisive, fresh, and precise exploration of anti-fatness as anti-Blackness, foregrounding the state-sanctioned murders of fat Black men and trans and nonbinary masculine people in historical analysis. Policing, disenfranchisement, and invisibilizing of fat Black men and trans and nonbinary masculine people are pervasive, insidious ways that anti-fat anti-Blackness shows up in everyday life.

Taking on desirability politics, the limitations of gender, the connection between anti-fatness and carcerality, and the incongruity of “health” and “healthiness” for the Black fat, Harrison viscerally and vividly illustrates the myriad harms of anti-fat anti-Blackness.

Favourite Quote:
“Because, while it is true that the violences of this World are happening to the body, the violence is not created by the body”

We recommend this read for anyone interested in Exploring the intersections of Blackness, gender, fatness, health, and the violence of policing.

Healing isn’t about being happy all the time or feeling nothing at all. It’s about allowing yourself to fully feel what’s appropriate - sadness after loss, anger at injustice, joy when it comes - and trusting that you can return to yourself afterward.

The ability to feel deeply and come back to rest isn’t weakness. It’s health. It’s resilience. It’s being human.

Check out No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz!
Is there just one “you”? We’ve been taught to believe we have a single identity, and to feel fear or shame when we can’t control the inner voices that don’t match the ideal of who we think we should be. Yet Dr. Richard Schwartz’s research now challenges this “mono-mind” theory. “All of us are born with many sub-minds―or parts,” says Dr. Schwartz. “These parts are not imaginary or symbolic. They are individuals who exist as an internal family within us―and the key to health and happiness is to honor, understand, and love every part.”

Dr. Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems (IFS) model has been transforming psychology for decades. With No Bad Parts, you’ll learn why IFS has been so effective in areas such as trauma recovery, addiction therapy, and depression treatment―and how this new understanding of consciousness has the potential to radically change our lives.
Favourite quote: “We often find that the harder we try to get rid of emotions and thoughts, the stronger they become. This is because parts, like people, fight back against being shamed or exiled.”

She’s officially back! 🎉 After some time away on maternity leave, Registered Social Worker and OG BHC team member Michelle is excited to announce her return to Being Human Club!

Michelle is currently accepting new and returning clients as she gets back into the swing of things!

Michelle works one on one with adults and teens (13+), utilizing an individualistic approach to therapy because she strongly believes there’s no “one size fits all” in this work.
With specialized training in the areas of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addictions, ADHD, and trauma, Michelle tailors sessions with a focus on feeling, understanding, and addressing root concerns.
Michelle believes it’s important to work with both the mind and body in sessions, and utilizes multiple interventions, including both EMDR & ART.
If you’re looking for a therapist who brings her personality (hello humour!) and humanity into each session, Michelle might be the right fit for you. Be prepared to laugh and cry all in one session!

So, if you’re one of Michelle’s previous humans, or interested in connecting with Michelle for the first time, you can reach out through Being Human Club or can contact mivawellness directly to book in.

Welcome back Michelle, we missed you!

Due to the urgent city-wide water restrictions in Calgary, we’re making a few temporary changes to help conserve water.

For now, we’ll be offering folks beverages in compostable cups provided by monogramco and pausing reusable cup options, in an attempt to reduce water associated with dishwashing as much as possible.

This is a short-term measure to support the city during this emergency. Thank you for your understanding and for helping us all do our part 💧

Bill 9 will not protect gender-diverse youth, it will harm them.

Restricting names, pronouns, identity, and access to care doesn’t make young people safer, it isolates them, increases risk, and strips away the support every human deserves.

Right now, it’s more important than ever to stand with Alberta’s Trans community.

We need to continue speaking up, showing up, and challenging policies that marginalize vulnerable young people.

Keep writing. Keep calling. Keep showing up. We must refuse to let misinformation drown out compassion.

Trans youth deserve safety, dignity, and care.

🎉Please join us in officially welcome Brenda to the BHC Team! 🎉

Hi, I’m Brenda (she/her) and I’m a Certified Canadian Counsellor who works with individuals and couples concerning trauma, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, shame, self-worth, stress, grief, & loss.

Sometimes we all need a place to lay out the pieces of our story and make sense of how they fit together. In therapy, taking time to do this with care allows us to access and transform our relationship with difficult emotions, thoughts, and experiences, creating space for new ways of being.

I believe change begins the moment we feel truly seen and understood. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where your uniqueness is honoured. You are the expert on your own experiences and the architect of your future. I am passionate about working collaboratively as you uncover insight, move through distress, and nurture your relationship with yourself and others.

I practice from a trauma-informed perspective and take a holistic, person-centered approach, drawing from therapies including Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

I have a special interest in supporting clients navigating trauma, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, shame, self-worth, stress, emotional regulation, and grief and loss. You can expect a blend of warmth, curiosity, and humour in our sessions.

Outside of therapy, you can find me in nature, trying new food, annoying my dog and cat, or trying to get through my constantly growing reading list.

I am currently accepting new clients for individual and couples therapy, both in person and online.
