It usually happens when you least expect it—a sudden drip that sends you scrambling for a tissue. While nosebleeds (epistaxis) can be startling, they are incredibly common and usually easy to manage right from home.
What causes them?
- The lining of your nose contains tiny, delicate blood vessels that sit close to the surface, making them easy to irritate. The two most common culprits are:
- Dry Air: Low humidity or dry winter air (especially common right here in Alberta!) dries out the nasal membranes, causing them to crack and bleed.
- Friction & Irritation: Frequent nose-blowing, picking, or irritation from allergies and colds.
How to treat a nosebleed (The Right Way):
- Lean FORWARD, Not Back: Lean slightly forward over a sink or tissue. Leaning back causes blood to run down your throat, which can cause choking or stomach irritation.
- Pinch the Soft Part: Use your thumb and index finger to firmly pinch the soft part of your nose, just below the bony bridge.
- Hold for 10 Minutes: Keep constant pressure for at least 10 full minutes without checking. Breathe through your mouth.
- Stay Calm & Cool: Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the bridge of your nose to help constrict the blood vessels.
To prevent future nosebleeds, try using a saline nasal spray or running a humidifier in your bedroom to keep the nasal passages moist.
