WHAT IF YOU’RE TRYING TO DRINK LESS, BUT YOU’RE MISSING PART OF THE REASON YOU DRINK?

When someone wants to cut back on alcohol or change their drinking habits, it’s easy to focus entirely on the alcohol. But sometimes there are other things happening in your life and your body that are influencing the pattern without you realizing they’re connected.

This is why I look at alcohol use and addiction through a biopsychosocial lens.

BIOLOGY: What is happening in your body?

Have you recently started or changed a medication? Has your appetite changed? Are you suddenly craving sugar or refined carbohydrates? Are you sleeping poorly? Are you exhausted at a certain time every day? Have there been changes in your physical health, hormones, energy or stress response?

Sometimes when people reduce one source of comfort or reward, they find themselves reaching for another. Your body matters when you’re trying to understand alcohol cravings and drinking behaviour. If you notice significant changes after starting or changing a medication, speak with your doctor or pharmacist about what you’re experiencing.

PSYCHOLOGY: What is happening in your life and your mind?

Have you recently retired and suddenly lost the structure you had for decades? Are you bored? Lonely? Anxious? Grieving? Frustrated? Have you lost a sense of purpose or something you used to look forward to?

Perhaps alcohol has become the thing that marks the end of the day, gives you something to anticipate, quiets your thoughts, changes your mood or fills time that suddenly feels empty.

SOCIAL: What is happening around you?

Who do you drink with? Has drinking become part of dinner, watching sports, weekends, vacations or seeing friends? Has your social life changed? Are there certain people, places or situations where drinking feels almost automatic?

These questions matter because changing your relationship with alcohol involves understanding the whole person, rather than simply counting drinks.

If you’re sober curious, questioning gray area drinking, trying to cut back on alcohol, struggling with alcohol cravings or finding yourself repeatedly thinking, “Why do I keep doing this when I sa

Is addiction different for women than it is for men? YES IT IS!

Through a biopsychosocial lens, we see a much bigger picture. Hormones and biology matter. Trauma, anxiety, stress and emotional regulation matter. Relationships, caregiving, stigma, financial pressure, access to support, and environment matter. And addiction isn’t limited to substances. Sometimes the most important question isn’t “How do we stop the behaviour?” It’s “What has this behaviour been doing for this person?” That question changes the conversation.

If you’re struggling with a habit, pattern or behaviour you want to change, I offer individualized support in Calgary and online. Reach out for a complimentary consultation.

Dreams have a fascinating way of bringing forward memories, emotions, people and places that we may not have consciously thought about for years, sometimes combining them in ways that seem strange until we begin wondering why those particular images appeared.

The subconscious often communicates through symbols, associations and emotional memory, which is why a childhood home, an object hidden somewhere, or a seemingly insignificant detail in a dream may carry more meaning than we first realize.

Rather than asking whether a dream makes logical sense, I find it far more interesting to ask what the mind might be processing, remembering or trying to bring into awareness while the conscious mind is quiet.

Sometimes the strangest part of a dream is the part worth paying attention to.

life isn't meant to be perfect... it's meant to be lived.

Take a deep breath today. Notice what's around you. Give yourself permission to be present, even if everything isn't exactly the way you hoped it would be.

Sometimes that's where healing begins.

Recovery isn't just about stopping alcohol or drugs. It's also about rebuilding your connection with yourself, with people you trust, and with a life that feels meaningful.

Many addictive behaviours begin as ways of coping with emotional pain, trauma, loneliness, or disconnection. They often start as an attempt to survive, not to fail.

As healthier connections begin to grow, the need for those old coping strategies can begin to fade. That's why recovery isn't just about giving something up. It's also about building something new.

Healing happens in connection. Recovery happens one step, one relationship, and one choice at a time.
