"I hate math!" uttered daily in frustration by any number of children and teens, often turns into "I'm not a math person," as an adult.
There is often a lot of sympathy for anyone struggling with math, because so many have experienced math struggles, but also with the vague assumption that calculators of all types...the ones many adults use even if they are very confident in their math skills - think mortgage calculators, currency converters, time zone apps, and just plain old calculators - can alleviate this.
But calculators can't alleviate Dyscalculia.
That's because some brains actually process quantities and numerals differently enough that traditional methods of teaching math concepts can cause a lot of confusion, frustration and anxiety.
For any parent or teacher who wants to change this, join Lindsey Bingley, literacy and numeracy strategist at Foothills Academy to explore what Dyscalculia is, its impact in daily life and how to approach teaching it differently.
