🚨 Alberta’s New 3‑in‑1 ID Cards Coming July 2026 🚨
Starting July 2, 2026, Alberta will begin rolling out new 3‑in‑1 ID cards that combine your driver’s licence or ID, healthcare number, and citizenship marker (if applicable).
Key things to know:
You don’t need to renew early—but don’t let your ID expire.
Your health coverage will now expire with your ID. If it expires, your healthcare coverage will also expire and you may be billed for medical services.
IDs must be renewed every 5 years (approx. $98 for a licence, $54 for an ID).
⚠️ This change may create barriers for many, including seniors, people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, addictions or financial hardship, and anyone without easy access to required documents, anyone without easy access to go to a registry in person to apply/renew, anyone likely to forget the expiration date.
Applying or renewing:
Must be done in person at a registry
Bring proof of identity, Alberta residency, and legal status in Canada
First-time applicants must show their current healthcare card
Stay informed and make sure you’re prepared so you don’t lose access to healthcare.
