🌈 Happy Pride Month from Embark Psychology Calgary! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Embark Psychology might not be the most active on social media, but we are active every day in supporting individuals, listening to stories, providing safe spaces, and helping people feel understood and accepted for who they are. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

We believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported exactly as they are. We celebrate and affirm the diversity of identities and experiences within our wonderful community!💫

Pride is both a celebration and a reflection. It's an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, courage, and contributions of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, while also recognizing the advocacy, struggle, and sacrifices that made this progress possible. There is so much to celebrate, and still important work ahead to make sure people can live authentically, safely, and without discrimination.

✨️ If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. ✨️ Embark Psychology Calgary offers counselling for all ages. You can also reach out to:
• Skipping Stone Foundation
• Calgary Outlink
• The Alex Youth Health Centre
• The Trevor Project
• Trans Lifelife
• Distress Centre Calgary

🌱 Supporting Teens Through Counselling 🌱

Being a teen today isn’t easy. Between school pressures, friendships, identity, and the constant noise of social media, it can feel overwhelming; sometimes even isolating.

Counselling offers teens a safe, non-judgmental space to:
✨ Talk openly about what’s on their mind
✨ Learn healthy ways to cope with stress and big emotions
✨ Build confidence and self-understanding
✨ Strengthen communication and relationships
✨ Feel heard, supported, and understood

Sometimes teens don’t need advice, they need a space where they can be themselves without pressure or expectation.

At Embark, we meet teens where they’re at. Whether they’re struggling with anxiety, mood, friendships, or just feeling “stuck,” we’re here to help them navigate it in a way that feels right for them.

💬 Reaching out can be a powerful first step.

✨ Is Your Child Feeling Bored or Unchallenged at School? ✨

At Embark Psychology, we often hear from parents who say:
“My child seems bored in class…”
“They finish their work so quickly, but aren’t being pushed…”
“They’re bright, but something just isn’t clicking at school…”

💡 Sometimes, this can be a sign of giftedness.

So, what is a 🌟gifted assessment?🌟

A gifted assessment is a specialized evaluation that helps identify children who may have advanced intellectual abilities and unique learning needs. Gifted learners often think deeply, learn quickly, and crave more complex or stimulating material, but without the right support, they can sometimes appear disengaged, restless, or even frustrated.

🧠 Common signs of giftedness may include:
• Easily mastering new concepts
• Strong curiosity and deep questioning
• Advanced vocabulary or reasoning skills
• Sensitivity or big emotional responses
• Feeling bored, distracted, or unchallenged in school

💛 How can a gifted assessment help?
A formal assessment can:
✔ Provide clarity and understanding of your child’s abilities
✔ Help explain why your child may feel bored or under-stimulated
✔ Open doors to enriched learning opportunities
✔ Support applications to specialized programs

🎓 In Calgary, there are wonderful opportunities for gifted learners, including programs like Westmount Charter School and the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Program.
At Embark Psychology, we can guide you through the process and provide the documentation and support needed when applying.

🌱 Our approach at Embark Psychology:
We ensure that every child feels comfortable, encouraged, and understood throughout the assessment process. We take the time to explain results clearly and provide meaningful, practical recommendations, so you leave feeling confident and supported.

💳 We also offer direct billing to many insurance providers, making the process smoother and more accessible for families.

If your child is bright but bored, curious but unchallenged, a gifted assessment may be an important next step 💫

📩 Reach out to learn more or to book a consultation. We’re here to help your child thrive.

✨ Understanding Psychoeducational Assessments ✨

At Embark Psychology, we believe that every child, teen, and adult deserves to feel understood, supported, and set up for success. One of the most powerful ways we can do that is through a 🌟psychoeducational assessment🌟.

So… what exactly is a psychoeducational assessment?

It’s a comprehensive, individualized evaluation that helps us better understand how someone learns, thinks, and processes information. These assessments can explore areas like:
🧠 Learning strengths and challenges
📚 Reading, writing, and math skills
💭 Attention, memory, and executive functioning
💛 Emotional and behavioural patterns

Families often seek psychoeducational assessments when they notice things like:
• Struggles in school despite strong effort
• Difficulties with focus or organization
• Big emotions or frustration around learning
• A desire to better understand their child’s unique strengths

💡 How can it help?
A psychoeducational assessment provides clear answers and practical recommendations. It can:
✔ Identify learning differences (such as ADHD or learning disabilities)
✔ Support access to school accommodations and funding
✔ Build confidence by highlighting strengths
✔ Offer tailored strategies for home, school, and everyday life

At Embark Psychology, we take great care to ensure the process feels supportive, collaborative, and empowering from start to finish. We walk alongside you every step of the way, explaining results in clear, meaningful language so you feel confident and informed.

💳 We also know that accessibility matters. Embark Psychology offers direct billing to many insurance providers, helping to reduce stress and make services more accessible for families.

If you’ve been wondering whether a psychoeducational assessment might be helpful for you or your child, we’re here to help guide you. You’re not alone in this journey 💛

Hello and welcome!

My name is Nichola Cross, and I am a Registered Psychologist who offers support for children, teens, and adults in the Calgary area. I complete a variety of comprehensive assessments to help you or your child understand your learning profile and provide strategies to set you up for success. My aim is to help you expand your knowledge, capitalize on your strengths, and provide evidence-based strategies to support your growth at school, at work, and/ or approaching daily tasks.

I earned my Master’s Degree in School and Applied Child Psychology from the University of Calgary, and I am a registered member with the College of Alberta Psychologists and the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. Before starting my own private practice, I worked for 4 years in a setting that specialized in LDs & ADHD, while also serving a specialized school. I then worked for several years within a school board where I supported students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities with comorbid disorders. Additionally, I worked for other private practices before starting my own. I’m always honoured when asked to partner with individuals to put all the pieces of the puzzle together to help enhance your success!

I look forward to meeting you!
