๐ŸŽ‰ Pondering Sunday Reflection โ€“ 40 Years of Learning

Today is a little different.

Today, I turn 40. ๐ŸŽ‚

Birthdays often encourage us to reflectโ€”not just on where we've been, but on who we've become.

As a psychologist, I spend much of my week helping others navigate life's challenges. Yet like everyone else, I've had my own experiences of uncertainty, change, setbacks, and growth. Looking back, I don't think I'd tell my younger self to avoid the difficult moments. Instead, I'd remind her that those moments would shape the resilience, compassion, and perspective she would one day offer to others.

One thing I've learned over the past 40 years is that growth rarely happens in giant leaps. More often, it happens through small, consistent choices.

๐ŸŒฟ Choosing to ask for help.
๐ŸŒฟ Choosing to set a boundary.
๐ŸŒฟ Choosing to forgive yourself.
๐ŸŒฟ Choosing to take a walk when your mind feels overwhelmed.
๐ŸŒฟ Choosing to keep going, even when progress feels slow.

These small decisions often become the turning points we only recognise in hindsight.

As I celebrate this milestone, I'm incredibly gratefulโ€”for my family, my clients who trust me with their stories, the colleagues I've learned alongside, and everyone who has supported Mindset Solutions Counselling throughout this journey.

If today gives you a reason to pause, I'd encourage you to ask yourself:

๐Ÿ’š What have I learned about myself this past year?
๐Ÿ’š What am I ready to let go of?
๐Ÿ’š What do I want to make more room for in the year ahead?

You don't have to wait for a birthday or New Year to begin making changes. Every day offers the opportunity to take one small step toward the life you want.

Here's to embracing the next decade with curiosity, gratitude, and continued growth. Thank you for being part of the journey. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒณ Pondering Sunday Reflection

When life feels overwhelming, our instinct is often to stay inside and withdraw.

Yet spending time outdoors can gently remind us to slow down, breathe, and reconnect.

Walk-and-talk therapy offers an opportunity to combine professional psychological support with the restorative effects of being outside. While nature isn't a replacement for therapy, it can provide a calming environment that helps many people feel more relaxed and present during sessions.

๐ŸŒฟ Fresh air.
๐ŸŒฟ Gentle movement.
๐ŸŒฟ Open space.
๐ŸŒฟ Meaningful conversation.

Sometimes those simple ingredients create room for important breakthroughs.

During a walk-and-talk session, we'll move at a comfortable pace while exploring the thoughts, emotions, and experiences that matter most to you. There is no pressure to perform, no expectation to have everything figured out, and no "right" way to participate.

Healing isn't always about making huge changes overnight.

Often it's about taking one manageable step...
then another...
and another.

This week, consider spending even 10 minutes outdoors without your phone.

Notice:
๐Ÿƒ What do you hear?
๐Ÿƒ What do you notice?
๐Ÿƒ How does your body feel?
๐Ÿƒ What thoughts keep returning?

Awareness is often the first step toward change.

Whether your next step is simply taking a walk or booking your first therapy session, every journey starts somewhere.

Have a peaceful Sunday. ๐ŸŒผ

๐ŸŒค๏ธ Pondering Sunday Reflection

Many people delay starting therapy because they think they need to know exactly what's wrong before reaching out.

The truth is... you don't.

You don't need the perfect explanation.
You don't need to have the right words.
You don't need a crisis.

Sometimes clients simply arrive saying:

๐Ÿ’ญ "I feel overwhelmed."
๐Ÿ’ญ "Something just feels off."
๐Ÿ’ญ "I'm exhausted."
๐Ÿ’ญ "I don't know why I'm struggling."

That is enough.

Walk-and-talk therapy creates space to explore those thoughts without the pressure of sitting face-to-face in an office. Walking side by side can make difficult conversations feel more natural while allowing your body to move through stress rather than staying physically tense.

Research has shown that both physical activity and spending time in natural environments can support emotional wellbeing. When combined with evidence-based psychological therapy, many people find the experience grounding and refreshing.

You don't need to have every answer before asking for support.

Healing often begins with curiosity rather than certainty.

This Sunday, ask yourself:
๐ŸŒฑ What have I been carrying on my own?
๐ŸŒฑ What would it feel like to talk without judgement?
๐ŸŒฑ What's one small step I could take this week?

Sometimes that small step becomes the beginning of meaningful change.

You deserve support wherever you are in your journey. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟ Sunday Reflection: What if healing didn't have to happen sitting across from a desk?

Sometimes the best conversations happen when we're moving.

Walk-and-talk therapy combines the benefits of traditional counselling with the calming effects of nature and gentle movement. Rather than sitting in an office, we walk together outdoors at a pace that feels comfortable while exploring whatever is on your mind.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ Many people find it easier to open up while walking because there is less pressure to maintain eye contact and fewer feelings of being "put on the spot." Movement can also help reduce tension, improve focus, and make it easier to process difficult emotions.

Walk-and-talk therapy may be helpful if you're experiencing:
๐Ÿƒ Stress or burnout
๐Ÿƒ Anxiety
๐Ÿƒ Depression
๐Ÿƒ Life transitions
๐Ÿƒ Grief
๐Ÿƒ Relationship challenges
๐Ÿƒ Feeling "stuck"
๐Ÿƒ Difficulty expressing emotions

There is no expectation to be particularly fit or to walk quickly. Sessions are tailored to your comfort level, with plenty of opportunities to pause, sit, or slow down whenever needed.

Nature has a unique way of reminding us that growth isn't always fast, but it is always possible. Just as seasons change, so do we.

If you've been considering counselling but a traditional office setting doesn't feel like the right fit, walk-and-talk therapy might offer a different way to begin your journey.

Sometimes taking the first step is literally the first step. ๐ŸŒฑ

Therapy does not always have to happen sitting across from someone in an office.
Walk and Talk Therapy offers a more active, comfortable way to connect while enjoying the benefits of being outdoors. You can choose where you would like to walk, whether that is a familiar neighbourhood, a favourite park, or another location anywhere in Calgary, Strathmore, Cochrane, or the surrounding areas.
Walking side by side can help conversation feel more natural, reduce the pressure of direct eye contact, and provide an outlet for restless energy while you work through anxiety, stress, relationships, life transitions, ADHD, or other concerns.

Pondering Sunday ๐ŸŒฟ
Perfectionism Is Often Fear Wearing a Different Outfit

Perfectionism is rarely just about high standards.

More often, it is about fear. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Fear of failure.
Fear of judgment.
Fear of disappointing others.
Fear of not being enough.

Perfectionism can look productive from the outside. People may praise your achievements or reliability, while internally you feel exhausted trying to keep up. ๐Ÿง

It often says:

โ€œDo more.โ€
โ€œDo not mess up.โ€
โ€œIf you slow down, people will see the real you.โ€

Sometimes perfectionism hides behind procrastination. If something cannot be done perfectly, the nervous system avoids starting altogether.

The difficult truth is this:
No amount of achievement permanently soothes a nervous system built around fear.

Healing perfectionism involves learning that your worth cannot only exist in your productivity. ๐ŸŒฑ

You are allowed to:

make mistakes
learn publicly
rest without earning it
be imperfect and still worthy of care

Perhaps one of the bravest things a person can do is stop performing wellness and actually begin living it.

Pondering Sunday ๐ŸŒฟ
What Actually Happens in the First Therapy Session?

One of the biggest barriers to therapy is uncertainty. Many people imagine they will immediately have to unpack every painful experience they have ever had.

The reality is usually much gentler. ๐ŸŒฑ

The first session is not about fixing you. It is about understanding you.

In a first session, we often explore:
๐Ÿ’ญ What brought you in
๐Ÿ’ญ What life currently feels like
๐Ÿ’ญ Your goals for therapy
๐Ÿ’ญ Patterns or stressors you are noticing

Sometimes people cry. Sometimes they laugh nervously. Sometimes they do not know what to say at all.

All of that is okay.

You do not need perfectly organized thoughts or a rehearsed explanation for your pain. Most people come to therapy because life has started to feel overwhelming, exhausting, lonely, or stuck.

Therapy is not constant breakthroughs and profound quotes. Often it is quieter work:

learning emotional awareness
recognizing patterns
building boundaries
regulating the nervous system
understanding yourself differently ๐Ÿง

The first session is simply the beginning of that process.

And beginning is powerful. โค๏ธ

Pondering Sunday ๐ŸŒฟ
Understanding Your Window of Tolerance

Have you ever noticed how some days you can handle stress calmlyโ€ฆ and other days even a small inconvenience feels overwhelming?

That often means your nervous system has moved outside its โ€œwindow of tolerance.โ€ ๐Ÿง

The window of tolerance is the space where your nervous system feels regulated enough to think clearly, process emotions, and cope effectively. But stress, trauma, burnout, anxiety, and overwhelm can push us outside that window.

For some people, this looks like hyperarousal:
โšก Racing thoughts
โšก Panic
โšก Irritability
โšก Feeling constantly โ€œon edgeโ€

For others, it looks like hypoarousal:
๐ŸŒซ Shutdown
๐ŸŒซ Exhaustion
๐ŸŒซ Emotional numbness
๐ŸŒซ Feeling disconnected

Your nervous system is trying to protect you โ€” even if the response no longer feels helpful. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Healing is not about never becoming dysregulated. It is about learning to recognize your nervous system earlier, respond with compassion instead of shame, and slowly return to safety.

Sometimes regulation looks like deep breathing.
Sometimes it looks like rest, boundaries, or asking for support.

You deserve moments where your body feels safe enough to exhale. ๐ŸŒฑ
