Dr. Charmagne Sia Lu, ND

Throughout my life, I’ve had interactions with doctors that didn’t feel like they were listening to me, they were more interested in looking at my symptoms, than addressing my concerns. It wasn’t only with doctors either, there would be other times I wasn’t taken seriously, and I would leave feeling annoyed, disappointed, and disregarded. I would have to deal with my eczema, and the mental and physical stress it caused on my own. Interactions like this made me appreciate it when I finally found a doctor that would listen to me, and not disregard me, and I felt like I could work with them to figure out what was going on with me. I needed to find someone to see me and not just the symptoms I have. I know how important it is to be heard and to connect with your doctor that way. That’s why I strive to listen to my patients and make them feel heard and cared for. This is even more emphasized when I work with expecting families and breastfeeding mothers. Having a newborn is a very emotional and overwhelming time of life, and even though it is beautiful, there are people who struggle, at a time they are more vulnerable and need support from people who will listen to them and their concerns. Throughout my life, I have seen and interacted with so many people who have been disabled or even crippled from their daily jobs and activities to know that everyone needs a little bit of self-care. Treat your mind and body the way it deserves to be treated and follow me on a new health journey. As a Manual Osteopathic Therapist, our philosophy states that “the human body has the capability to protect, repair and regenerate itself to preserve its function”. However, sometimes it might just need a little nudge in the right direction for it to heal more effectively and efficiently. Using the different systems of the body as a whole, we can formulate a personalised treatment plan specifically to help you achieve the goals you want in your health. As a Registered Massage Therapist, I believe that every muscle in the body tells a story. It can hold emotions and energy where it’s no longer needed. And by releasing the baggage or memories of trauma in the body, it would allow you to live life to the fullest. My areas of focus include realigning the body structurally such as osteoarticulation, visceral manipulation, and soft tissue manipulation. Outside of my clinical practice, I like to live both actively and artistically. From teaching partner dancing to creating music in my home studio, I strive to keep my passions constantly growing, allowing me to enjoy every moment of my life and I hope I can do the same for you too. That first step out of bed shouldn't hurt!

If you experience sharp heel pain when you get up in the morning or after sitting for a while, you may be dealing with plantar fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, helping support your arch. When it becomes irritated, walking, exercising, and even standing can become uncomfortable.

So, where does photobiomodulation (PBM) fit in?

PBM uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with your cells. Research has explored its potential to help reduce pain and support tissue recovery in people with plantar fasciitis.

PBM may be one piece of the puzzle.
Depending on your needs, treatment may also involve appropriate stretching, strengthening exercises, footwear modifications, and adjustments to your activity levels.

You don't have to simply push through the pain and hope it goes away!

Struggling with persistent heel pain? Reach out to learn whether photobiomodulation may be an appropriate addition to your treatment plan.

**Acne is more than just a skin problem. 🧴✨**

If you’ve struggled with acne, you’ve probably heard it all: *“Just wash your face more.” “Stop eating chocolate.” “It’s just hormones.”*

But acne is often more complex than that.

Acne can be influenced by several factors, including:
✨ Hormones and androgen activity
✨ Inflammation
✨ Poor hormonal metabolism
✨ Constipation
✨ The skin microbiome
✨ Poor dietary choices
✨ Stress and sleep

And that’s why there isn’t one universal solution that works for everyone.

Rather than simply treating the breakout, it can be helpful to ask: **what factors might be contributing to YOUR acne?**

Your skin can give us clues about what’s happening beneath the surface — and understanding those clues can help create a more personalized approach.

If you’re tired of constantly chasing the next breakout, let’s look at the bigger picture. 💙

Could photobiomodulation be right for you? 🤔

The answer depends on your individual health concerns, goals, and medical history.

PBM isn't a one-size-fits-all solution—and it shouldn't be presented that way.

It may be considered as part of an individualized treatment plan for certain concerns, including those involving pain, recovery, and tissue health.

Before beginning any new treatment, it's important to determine whether it is appropriate for your specific situation.

✨ Curious about photobiomodulation?

Let's have a conversation about your health goals and explore whether PBM may be a good addition to your treatment plan.

Let's clear up a common misconception:

🚫 Photobiomodulation is NOT the same as using a tanning bed.

Tanning beds use ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is associated with skin damage and an increased risk of skin cancer.

Photobiomodulation, on the other hand, typically uses specific wavelengths of red and/or near-infrared light.

These are different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and interact with the body differently.

So, while both involve “light,” the purpose and wavelengths are very different.

✨ Understanding the difference is important when exploring light-based therapies.

Have you ever confused red light therapy with tanning?

Does photobiomodulation hurt?

This is one of the most common questions I receive—and the answer is generally no! ✨

PBM is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light.

Many people find treatments comfortable, and depending on the equipment and treatment area, you may feel little to nothing during your session.

Because every treatment is individualized, the experience can vary depending on your health concerns and the area being treated.

The best way to know what your appointment may look like is to ask!

What does photobiomodulation look like in a naturopathic clinic? ✨

It starts with understanding the person sitting in front of me.

Before recommending any treatment, I want to understand:

💙 What are your primary concerns?
💙 How long have you been experiencing them?
💙 What treatments have you already tried?
💙 What does your overall health picture look like?
💙 What are your goals?

From there, we can discuss whether photobiomodulation may be an appropriate addition to your individualized treatment plan.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to health.

Your treatment should be as individual as you are.
