September means more than classrooms and backpacks. For many families, it also means a return to hockey, football, basketball, soccer, and other activities.

And while we want young athletes focused on having fun and playing their best, protecting their teeth, mouth, and face deserves a place on the checklist too.

A properly fitted mouthguard can help reduce the risk of dental and oral injuries during many contact and high-impact sports.

So, along with the helmet, shoes, water bottle, and uniform, remember the mouthguard.

It’s a small piece of equipment protecting a smile you want to keep for a lifetime.

Parents and athletes: what sport are you getting ready for this fall? Tell us below!

When we hear the words “impacted tooth,” most of us immediately think of wisdom teeth.

But did you know that canine teeth can become impacted too?

Canines, the pointed teeth near the front of your smile, usually come in during the early teenage years. Sometimes, however, a canine doesn’t erupt normally and remains trapped beneath the gum or bone.

Depending on the situation, an orthodontist and oral surgeon may work together to help bring the tooth into the right position.

It’s a great example of how different dental specialists can work as a team, with one goal: finding the right treatment approach for each patient.

Had you heard of an impacted canine before?

👍 Yes, I knew about it
😮 No, I thought only wisdom teeth became impacted!

Before Treatment Comes Planning.

You may not think much about what happens behind the scenes before oral surgery.

But careful planning is an important part of treatment.

Depending on the procedure, detailed imaging can help the surgical team better understand the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures before treatment begins.

At Steve Bureau Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, advanced imaging and careful treatment planning are part of providing patients with informed, individualized care.

Because every patient is different, the best treatment plan starts with understanding the individual, not simply treating a picture or a symptom.

Would you like us to explain what 3D dental imaging actually shows? Comment “YES” below and we’ll make that our next educational post.

Could Your Consultation and Surgery Happen on the Same Day?

Sometimes, yes, but it depends on the individual patient and the procedure.

At Steve Bureau Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, selected patients may be able to have their consultation and surgery on the same day when appropriate.

However, the priority is always making sure the patient is properly assessed and that the treatment plan is appropriate.

Your medical history, the type and complexity of the procedure, and other factors all need to be considered.

So if you’re hoping to have treatment completed in one visit, mention it when scheduling your appointment. Our team can help explain what may be possible in your situation.

Summer Fun Is Great. Facial Injuries Aren’t.

Summer means sports, biking, hiking, outdoor activities, and plenty of opportunities to stay active.

Unfortunately, accidents can happen.

A fall, collision, or sports injury can affect the teeth, jaw, mouth, or face. When that happens, getting the injury properly assessed is important.

And prevention matters too.

If you or your child participates in contact or high-impact sports, ask your dental professional whether a properly fitted mouthguard is appropriate.

A little preparation can go a long way toward protecting a healthy smile.

Parents, coaches and athletes: share this post as a reminder before the next game or practice.

Your Mouth Can Tell You When Something Needs Attention.

We often notice changes in our teeth, but what about the rest of our mouth?

A sore that doesn’t seem to heal.
A lump or swelling.
An unusual red or white patch.
A change that just doesn’t look or feel normal.

Many mouth changes are not serious, but persistent or unusual changes are worth having checked by a dental professional.

The important thing is not to diagnose yourself. It’s simply to notice changes and get the right professional advice when something concerns you.

Taking a few minutes to pay attention to your oral health can make a difference.

When was the last time you really looked at the inside of your mouth?

Thinking About Dental Implants? Start With a Consultation.

If you’re missing a tooth, you may already be wondering whether a dental implant is right for you.

The answer isn’t the same for everyone.

Before treatment, an oral surgeon needs to look at factors such as your oral health, available bone, the condition of the surrounding structures, and your overall treatment goals.

That’s why the consultation matters.

It gives you an opportunity to understand your options, ask questions, and find out what may be appropriate for your particular situation.

If you’ve been thinking about replacing a missing tooth, don’t feel like you have to figure it all out on your own.

After some oral surgery procedures, soft foods may be recommended during the early stage of recovery.

Some patient-friendly options may include yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies eaten with a spoon, soft pasta, applesauce, oatmeal, and soups that are warm but not too hot.

The most important thing is to follow the specific instructions given for your procedure, because every patient and every surgery is different.

Planning your recovery foods ahead of time can make the first few days feel much easier.

Today is International Youth Day, a reminder to support young people as they build healthy habits for the future.

For teens and young adults, oral health decisions can include wisdom teeth assessment, sports injury prevention, mouthguard use, and understanding when a referral to an oral surgeon may be needed.

If your teen has been advised to have their wisdom teeth monitored or assessed, August can be a good time to plan before the school year becomes busy.

A little preparation today can help families feel more organized and confident tomorrow.

Share this with a parent, student, or young adult preparing for the school year.
