It doesn’t hurt at first. That’s the trap. 👀
By the time oral or throat cancer becomes painful, it may already have spread (metastasized) to the lymph nodes in the neck. In fact, for many people with HPV-related throat cancer, the first sign is a painless lump in the neck, which means the cancer has already reached the lymph nodes.
About 70% of oropharyngeal cancers (back of the mouth, tonsils and throat) are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). It’s now the most common HPV-related cancer in the U.S., ahead of cervical cancer.
And it’s not just smokers anymore. HPV-related throat cancers often affect people in their 40s and 50s, many of whom have never smoked.
Get checked if any of these last more than 2 weeks:
🔸 A mouth sore or ulcer that won’t heal
🔸 A red or white patch
🔸 Unexplained bleeding or numbness
🔸 A lump in the mouth or neck
🔸 Trouble chewing or swallowing
🛡️ Prevention starts early:
The HPV vaccine protects against the HPV types linked to these cancers. It works best when given before any exposure to HPV, which is why Canadian school programs offer it to both girls and boys.
Avoiding to***co and limiting alcohol lowers your risk.
Regular dental visits and a monthly mirror check help catch changes early.
Found before it spreads, oral and throat cancers are much easier to treat, with far better outcomes.
💾 Save this for your monthly 60-second mirror check.
