When I first entered this industry 30 years ago, it looked very different than it does today.
At the time, aesthetics was largely centred around traditional services like facials, manicures and pedicures. They absolutely had their place, but the tools available to us and our understanding of the skin were much more limited.
Over the last three decades, advances in science, technology and professional training have completely changed what’s possible.
Today, we can approach concerns like pigmentation, texture, fine lines, acne scarring and overall skin health with far more sophisticated options. Treatments like laser skin resurfacing, advanced chemical peels and technologies from companies like Alma allow us to work with the skin in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I first started my career.
But with better technology comes a greater responsibility to understand it.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over 30 years is that experience doesn’t mean you get to stop learning. This industry moves quickly, and I’m constantly educating myself, learning about new technologies and techniques and evaluating what is genuinely worth bringing into the clinic.
Not every new treatment or device is automatically better. My job is to understand the science, the technology and the person sitting in front of me so I can make thoughtful recommendations based on what I believe will actually benefit their skin.
Thirty years later, that commitment to learning is stronger than ever.
