“What other people think of you is none of your business” - advice from my mom and a challenging reminder for me as a resident people pleaser 🙄

Between us, I had no idea what this meant growing up! Like, what do you mean? Of course it’s my business! If I know what they think then I can work to change their mind or convince them I’m not what they think!

🙅🏻‍♀️ it took me a few decades to understand this advice, and it’s echoed in my mind all year long. What other people think of me, truly is none of my business. When we live our lives aligned with our values, making decisions that reflect those values, other people may not agree with us. They may even not like us for those decisions. And that is okay!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s massively uncomfortable (from time to time). And it takes a lot of effort to continue to sit in that discomfort. But wow, it’s been worth it.

And of course, we have to take a moment to talk about how griefy this is. Our parents give us advice and guidance that sometimes doesn’t resonate for decades. I wish for so many reasons that she was alive, but especially so I could hear a “told ya” when I shared my epiphany. Miss you mom 🫶🏽

Grief really has a way of bringing us back to what matters most to us. But maybe that’s the whole point? Grief doesn’t work when the most important things in our lives are achieving more, earning more, being more, consuming more. And we lean into this by saying that grief is a problem. But what if, what if it’s our society that has the problem? What if we were always meant to be in the presence of grief, guided by its pain, learning from all it has to teach us?

I hope this isn’t a hot take… but it might be.

Your birth plan not going the way you wanted can result in grief. And that’s okay. Regardless of the outcome, you’re allowed to experience deep sadness, longing, depression, about what DID happen. Oh, you might also grieve the experience of becoming a parent… should I talk about that next?

If you’re grieving a birth that didn’t go as planned and need support, click the link in my bio to book a free consultation.

More “look at this sunset” “the moon is stunning” “how do the clouds make that shape” “the birds are singing a beautiful song this morning” “the dust is magical” “the cold air reminds me I’m alive” this fall 🫶🏽

When we’re in the depths of trauma work, grieving a life that should have been, it’s so hard to notice the small things. But the trauma work and the grief also open us up to the small things, life is funny life that. On our way through pain, we become more aware of what makes us feel alive 💕

Grieving Your Companion - a gentle guide for hard days 💕

Grief looks differently for all of us- just because someone’s experience is different than yours, doesn’t make their pain any less valid. Grieving a pet is one of those losses that we have decided as a society isn’t worthy of being grieved. I don’t agree with this and I truly believe you deserve the space to honour your pet, grieve them, miss them, and continue to love them long after they have gone.

I’ll forever carry these pups in my heart:

Luke
Zoe
Winnie
Chester
Lily
Roxie
Boss Man

& so many more 💕

Grieve for your animals, it’s part of our bond 🫶🏽

I remember 5 years after my mom had died, I started to finally feel like me again, or this new version of me interwoven with grief, but not entirely consumed. I remember at the beginning of the summer thinking “wow… okay! We are through it.” But by the Fall, grief had resurfaced and asked me again to learn how to swim in the heartache of this loss.

It was around that time that I started to really understand that while grief ebbs and flows, it will always be part of me. It sounds silly to say this, because of course grief will always be here. But *living* that reality is so different than *knowing* that reality.

I try to live hand in hand with grief now, instead of ushering her in every once in a while. Grief deserves its place. Grief has earned the right to be here, it’s me that has to learn to live beside it. 🫶🏽🦋
