When most people hear insulin, they think diabetes.
But insulin does so much more than manage your blood sugar.
Insulin is a messenger. After you eat, insulin rises and carries a message to different tissues throughout your body: energy is available and here’s what to do with it.
💪 Muscles: Insulin helps muscle cells take up glucose from the bloodstream. That glucose can be used for energy or stored as glycogen for later.
🫀 Liver: Insulin tells the liver that glucose is available, encouraging glycogen storage while reducing the amount of glucose the liver releases into the bloodstream. It also influences how the liver handles fat and triglycerides.
⚖️ Fat tissue: Insulin promotes energy storage and suppresses the breakdown of stored fat. When energy is plentiful, fat cells can store that energy as triglycerides for later.
🧠 Brain & appetite: Insulin also acts as a signalling hormone in the brain and interacts with the systems involved in hunger, fullness, reward and energy balance.
♀️ Reproductive hormones: Higher insulin levels can affect ovarian hormone production and reduce SHBG (s*x hormone-binding globulin), which can increase the amount of biologically available androgens. This is one of the important connections between insulin resistance and PCOS, irregular cycles and fertility.
❤️ Cardiometabolic health: Insulin resistance often occurs alongside changes in triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure and visceral fat, which is why metabolic health is about much more than a glucose number.
So when your cells become less sensitive to insulin, the effects aren’t limited to sugar.
Your pancreas may compensate by producing more and more insulin to get the same message through.
And because insulin is sending messages throughout the body, chronically higher insulin and insulin resistance can show up in many different ways.
That’s why insulin resistance isn’t just a blood-sugar conversation.
Blood sugar is only one piece of the story. 📖
