Not all skincare acids do the same thing!
Some exfoliate, some clear pores, and some are all about hydration.
• Hyaluronic Acid
Unlike exfoliating acids, hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it attracts and holds water in the skin. It helps improve hydration, plumpness and the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration. Great for almost all skin types, including dry and sensitive skin.
• Glycolic Acid (AHA)
An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the surface of the skin by helping loosen dead skin cells. It can help improve dullness, uneven texture, the appearance of dark spots and fine lines. Glycolic acid is one of the stronger AHAs, so introducing it gradually is important.
• Lactic Acid (AHA)
Another AHA that exfoliates the skin’s surface, but is generally gentler than glycolic acid. It can help smooth rough texture, brighten dull skin and improve uneven tone while also offering some hydrating benefits. Often a good option for those newer to exfoliating acids.
• Salicylic Acid (BHA)
A beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that is oil soluble, allowing it to pe*****te into pores. It helps remove excess oil and buildup, making it especially useful for oily or acne prone skin, clogged pores and blackheads.
So what’s the difference between AHA & BHA?
AHAs mainly exfoliate the surface of the skin, while BHA can work within oily pores. Neither is automatically “better”, the right choice depends on your skin type and what you’re trying to treat.
And remember: more isn’t always better. Using too many active ingredients at once can lead to irritation and damage the skin barrier. Introduce acids gradually, moisturize, and don’t forget daily SPF. ☀️
Not sure which acid belongs in your routine? A personalized skincare plan can help take the guesswork out of choosing the right ingredients for your skin.
