Class FOUR:

The Art of Nurtured Infant (and Family) Sleep

One of the most requested topics when it comes to info about babies is sleep. In this class we will go over beliefs about sleep, healthy expectations, safe sleep environments AND how nurtured and responsive infant care (day and night) lead to optimal brain development.

We will chat about ways to stay regulated, cognitive distortions, common red flags, and what the care providers role is when it comes to brain development in infants. There’s a lot of science behind sleep these days and we learned from the best

Can’t wait to have you!

Class THREE:

Postpartum - A New Way of BEing

Here we will use the archetype of myth from class one to learn more about what to expect and how to thrive in your postpartum journey. We will explore the art of doing nothing - the power move of rebelling against cultural beliefs about rest plus how to mentally prepare for this extremely potent way of BEing.

We will talk about self care aka actual tools that KEEP YOU WELL, including your mental health and emotional intelligence. We also help build community. No one is meant to do this alone and yet most people end up burning themselves out because of deeply ingrained beliefs about independence and asking for help.

One more topic for this class = trusting yourself as a parent. We will work more with distinguishing fear from intuitive knowledge and focus on how to set loving boundaries.

After working three postpartum shifts with different families last weekend alone I can truly say that the introspection and exploration of the themes of this class are needed now more than ever. Join us, send me a DM to register!

Class TWO:

Labour and Delivery - Coping Well by Trusting Yourself

Class two focuses on themes like pain coping tools, the purpose of pain and fear in labour, and how to follow your instincts or make a decision when you feel afraid. We will talk about how to honour your fear and MOVE INTO TRUST. We will cover how having someone there who trusts birth leads to better outcomes. This person can be your partner, a friend, or a doula. Whoever they are, they better have unwavering confidence in the process and be able to continuously support you.

We are very excited to have a guest speaker for class two! Briana of will share all about her pregnancy and birth experience, how she used her pregnancy to become truly embodied and how she was able to trust herself on a whole new level in labour and delivery.

See you in April!

Class ONE:

Birth as a Heroic Journey - The Hormones of Labour - Beliefs About Birth

This meet-up goes beyond the stages of labour, it will take you deeper into what support looks like for each phase - internal AND external. We go over the delicate symphony of working with your body, and of what your body is capable of. There are pauses for breath awareness, times to notice what takes you out of flow states and what keeps you in.

Long overdue! Progress nonetheless.

Everyone who wants to have a child should have the opportunity to do so. For some people, in-vitro fertilization is one of the few or only options.

Starting April 1st, 2025, one cycle of IVF will be free in British Columbia. People who want to grow their family should be able to, regardless of their relationship status, who they love or how much money they make. This will help more people on the path to parenthood, and is just one of the actions we're taking to grow accessible health care and bring down costs for people.

The BC Women's Hospital is in dire need of milk donations for the very sick and/or preterm babies in their care.

If you are able to donate, please go here for more info on how to do so:

Without our very special donors, we could not provide donor milk to our fragile recipients. We appreciate the effort and support this group provides to the milk bank.

It all comes down to informed choice 🙌🏼

It all comes down to informed choice 🙌🏼

Every so often, a group of paediatricians write and publish an article in a medical journal about the fact that some parents decline vitamin K for their newborn baby.

Generally, they express their concern and the overarching message is that these parents are making the ‘wrong’ decision, thus professionals need to use better tools to persuade them down the ‘right’ path.

Vitamin K is effective, they say.

And they’re right on that point.

If we gave it to every baby, they say, we would prevent almost all cases of vitamin K deficiency bleeding.

Right again.

I’ve read the same research that they have.

But the next bit of their argument is where they and I differ.

Because I’m all about parents having all of the information so they can make the decisions that are right for them. Which includes not just the short-term benefits of interventions, but the wider picture.

That includes any medium and long-term consequences (which is very important when it comes to things like induction, and antibiotics for group B strep) and also the gaps in our knowledge.

In other words, the questions that we don’t have answers to.

This is a key issue with vitamin K, and also with Anti-D/RhoGAM.

Because when proponents of western medicine find something that works, they tend to want to just give it to everyone, and they stop asking questions.

This closes off the paths that might lead to better, more nuanced options.

The paths that might help us to target interventions better, rather than making blanket recommendations and then trying to coerce compliance from those who – rightly – have concerns about this approach.

If you’d like to understand the bigger picture on vitamin K, without coercion in either direction, see www.sarawickham.com/vk

There, you'll find links to my popular book on this topic, and also my information hub, which contains several free articles to help those wanting to understand the pros and cons.

I hope you’ll find it useful.

I’ve been reviewing past course materials as I work my way through Holding Space for Pregnancy Loss by and I’ve come across a class called Rethinking Prenatals with which this post is inspired by.

As usual, there are always cases that differ from the ones I’m taking about here (which is a low risk pregnancy). The information is based on class notes and what I see as a doula in my practice.

One more thing, a partner doesn’t have to be whoever made this baby. You can build oxytocin with other people who you have a strong connection with. It’s about feelings of safety. There are variations.

That’s all for now ❤️
