Manitoba summers don't quit in August, and neither does the heat risk for your animals. A dog that's fine at 10am can be in real trouble by 2pm. Same goes for horses and livestock standing in a bare paddock with no shade.

Here's the fast version: pant heavier than usual, wobbly on their feet, gums that look bright red or pale, or just acting "off" in the heat? That's your sign to stop and check on them, not wait it out.

Water access matters more than people think, especially for animals on pasture. Two troughs beat one, always.

What's your go-to trick for keeping animals cool this time of year? Tell us below, we might steal it. πŸ˜‰

They can't tell us what's wrong. That's kind of the whole job. πŸ’™

We watch for the things owners sometimes miss, how they hold a leg, the look in their eyes, the question you're almost afraid to ask out loud.

Proud to do this work in St-Claude. If we've been part of your pet's story, we'd love to hear from you in the comments. πŸ‘‡

Save this. Seriously. 🚨

5 signs your pet is overheating:
πŸ”΄ Heavy panting that won't slow down
πŸ”΄ Thick, sticky drool
πŸ”΄ Bright red or pale gums
πŸ”΄ Wobbling or confusion
πŸ”΄ Vomiting or refusing to move

Move them somewhere cool, wet their paws and belly with cool water, and call us immediately. No ice, it can cause shock.

Share this with every dog owner you know. πŸ™

We need to know your pet's most unhinged personality trait. 🐾

White dog? Pink nose? Light-coloured cat? This one's important. 🌞

Pets can get sunburned, and repeated burns on the nose and ear tips are a real skin cancer risk.

Use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed skin (NOT human sunscreen), limit sun between 10am–4pm, and always give them a shaded spot.

Did you know this was a thing? Drop a 😳 below.

We hear this one a lot, and honestly, it makes sense why it stuck around. But here's the truth: your dog's nose changes throughout the day based on temperature, activity level, sleep, and humidity. A dry nose after a nap? Totally normal. A wet nose on a sick dog? Also possible.

What actually tells us more: changes in behaviour. Is your pet eating and drinking normally? Energetic? Interacting the way they usually do?
Those are the signals worth paying attention to. πŸ‘€

Did you grow up believing the wet nose rule? You're not alone, drop a 🐢 if this just changed everything you thought you knew.

Happy Canada Day from all of us at St. Claude Veterinary Clinic! 🍁🐾

While we're celebrating with family today, a gentle reminder for your four-legged family members: fireworks are beautiful to us, but they can be genuinely terrifying for pets. 😟

If your pet gets anxious around loud noises, here are a few things that can help:
🏠 Keep them indoors with windows and curtains closed
🎡 Put on calming music or TV to muffle the sounds
🧸 Give them a safe, cozy space they can retreat to
πŸ’Š Ask us in advance about calming options if your pet has severe anxiety

The best Canada Day is one where the whole family, fur and all, feels safe and loved. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Wishing everyone in St-Claude and beyond a wonderful long weekend! How are you celebrating?

Summer check-in time! 🌞 We want to know how your pet is really spending their summer.

Are they a…
🏊 Pool Shark β€” in the water before anyone else, showing zero fear
🌳 Shade Detective β€” has already mapped every cool spot in the yard
🐿️ Squirrel Correspondent β€” extremely busy, very important work, cannot be disturbed
😴 Professional Napper β€” heat is simply an excuse to sleep more (valid)
πŸ€” The Concerned One β€” just watching everyone else have fun, judging silently

Tag your pet type in the comments and tell us their name! 🐾 We have a feeling there are a LOT of Professional Nappers out there.

Hot cars aren't the only summer danger for pets, hot pavement is just as serious, and it sneaks up on a lot of us. 🌑️🐾

Here's a quick rule of thumb: if the pavement is too hot to hold the back of your hand on for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

On a 25Β°C day, asphalt can reach over 50Β°C. That's paw-burning territory, and it happens fast.

Best times for walks in summer:

πŸŒ… Early morning (before 9am)

πŸŒ™ Evening (after 7pm)

Stick to grass where you can, bring water, and watch for your dog lifting their paws or slowing down, they'll tell you when something's wrong, just not in words.

Share this with a dog-walking friend who needs the reminder! πŸ™Œ
