Therapy has changed, and I think it’s important that we talk about how.
A lot of us grew up with fairly rigid ideas about what therapy is supposed to look like: the therapist as the expert, emotions as something to regulate or control, boundaries as distance, healing as linear, and “healthy” as one specific way of being.
But people are much more complex than that.
These posts are about some of the shifts happening in how we think about therapy, and why I believe making room for context, culture, relationships, lived experience, identity, and individuality matters.
Not because everything traditional is wrong.
And not because everything modern is right.
But because our understanding of people keeps evolving, and our therapeutic approaches should have room to evolve too.
I’ll be completing 5 years in practice this December, and these are some of the conversations I’ve found myself returning to throughout those years.
So let’s question some of the “rules” we’ve inherited about therapy, and make space for approaches that actually reflect the complexity of being human.
