Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day.
This day is an opportunity to recognize and honour the diverse cultures, histories, languages, knowledge, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.
We also acknowledge that our practice operates on the traditional territory of the Lunaapeew (Delaware) Peoples and within the lands of the Three Fires Confederacy (Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Peoples). We recognize the continued presence and strength of Indigenous communities in this region, including Bkejwanong (Walpole Island First Nation), Delaware Nation at Moraviantown, Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, and Caldwell First Nation. We are grateful to live, work, and provide care on this land.
As mental health professionals, we recognize that wellness is deeply connected to community, culture, identity, and belonging. We also acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonialism, systemic inequities, and intergenerational trauma experienced by many Indigenous communities.
We believe that meaningful reconciliation requires more than acknowledgment. It requires ongoing learning, listening, reflection, and action.
Today, and throughout the remainder of National Indigenous History Month, we encourage our community to seek out Indigenous voices, learn about the history of the land they live on, and deepen their understanding of Indigenous perspectives and experiences.
