⚠ Wildlife Encounters on the Rise in Chatham-Kent: Help Prevent Rabies Exposure ⚠

Chatham-Kent Public Health is reminding residents to avoid direct contact with wildlife following an increase in preventable encounters with bats and raccoons in the community. These incidents have resulted in a growing number of individuals requiring Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), a series of treatments administered after a potential rabies exposure.

Bats and raccoons are among the wildlife species most commonly associated with rabies exposures in Ontario. Residents are reminded to take the following precautions:
• Never touch, handle, or feed wild animals.
• Keep a safe distance from bats, raccoons, and other wildlife.
• Teach children to avoid approaching or touching wild animals.
• Ensure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
• Seek assistance from trained animal control or wildlife professionals if an animal appears sick, injured, or abandoned.

⚠ Orange Level Air Quality Warning Issued for Chatham-Kent ⚠

Poor air quality in Chatham-Kent is expected later today, as smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario moves into the area. Poor air quality may persist through Friday July 17, 2026.

Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health, even at low concentrations. Additionally, people with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.

To learn what actions you can take to reduce exposure, read the full media release at: www.ckphu.com/newsroom

💤 Safe Sleep Checklist for Baby 💛

Keeping your baby safe while they sleep is so important. Here are three key tips to follow:

✅ 1) Back to Sleep – Every Time
Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime sleep.

✅ 2) Create a Safe Sleep Space
✔ Use a firm, flat mattress with a tight-fitting sheet
✔ No gaps around the mattress
✔ No loose or soft items (no pillows, toys, bumpers, or blankets)
✔ Baby sleeps safest in a crib, cradle, or bassinet

✅ 3) Room Share
Keep your baby in their own crib, cradle, or bassinet in your room for the first 6 months.
