Mental Health Struggles Don’t Discriminate: Why Reaching Out Matters

The recent news surrounding celebrity blogger Perez Hilton’s severe mental health crisis and subsequent hospitalization serves as a powerful, somber reminder that mental health battles do not discriminate based on fame, success, or public persona.

Following months of intense physical health challenges—including a life-threatening battle with sepsis and emergency surgery—Hilton experienced an acute mental health breakdown that captured public concern across social media. Beyond the headlines, this situation highlights how deeply interconnected our physical and mental health truly are. Prolonged physical illness, chronic stress, isolation, and psychological trauma can push even the most visible public figures past their breaking point.

At Strigid Guide Therapy, we want to remind everyone:
Crisis can happen to anyone. You don't need a "valid enough" reason to struggle. Psychological distress manifests in many ways, and no one should have to navigate it in silence.

Physical and mental health are inseparable. Physical illness, hospital stays, and severe body stress frequently trigger heightened anxiety, depression, and disorientation. Caring for your mind during medical recovery is essential.

Seeking help is an act of strength, not failure. Reaching out when you feel overwhelmed, burnt out, or lost is often the first step toward healing and safety.

If you or someone you love is experiencing a crisis, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling to cope with life's heavy burdens, please know that support is available right now:

Crisis & Su***de Lifeline: Call or text 988 (Available 24/7, free, and confidential)

Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

Emergency Services: Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you are in immediate danger.

You don't have to carry the weight alone. Whether you need ongoing support through life transitions or immediate professional guidance during a tough season, support is within reach.

💙 Reach out to Strigid Guide Therapy today to learn how our compassionate counseling services can support you or your loved ones on the path to healing.

Like so many across Western Canada, my heart is deeply heavy following the devastating news out of Calgary regarding 11-year-old Parker Wells.

As a mother of two children with intellectual disabilities, this tragedy hits especially close to home. The fierce love, constant vigilance, and deep care that goes into raising children with unique needs make a loss like this feel profoundly personal. For two weeks, we watched a community rally around a family experiencing a parent’s worst nightmare, and seeing that search end in heartbreak leaves a sadness that is hard to put into words.

The immense dedication shown by volunteers, first responders, and citizens was a powerful testament to how deeply Parker was held by those around him.

To Parker’s family, loved ones, and everyone who held onto hope: we surround you with love and compassion during this unimaginable grief.

Tragedies like this can trigger intense fear, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion—especially for parents, caregivers, and neurodivergent individuals. Please be gentle with yourself in the days ahead, lean on your support networks, and give yourself permission to feel whatever comes up.

Holding Parker’s family and the entire Calgary community close in my heart. 🤍

We often imagine healing as gentle self-care, but in addiction recovery, it frequently starts with facing raw, uncomfortable truths.

For many, addiction isn't just about the substance—it’s a coping response to deep pain that was never properly addressed. Confronting questions about where you were let down or left unprotected brings up grief and anger. But acknowledging that past neglect isn't about dwelling on the past; it's the exact moment you stop numbing, stop waiting for someone else to save you, and start standing up for yourself.

Recovery isn't always soft, but looking that pain in the eye is how you break the cycle and reclaim your agency. You don't have to carry the weight alone anymore.

Let’s be honest: balance is a myth and some mornings are just a series of unexpected plot twists. 😅

We often spend so much energy measuring our worth by what we achieve next or how well we meet outside expectations. But real fulfillment comes down to alignment: choosing a life that actually feels authentic to who you are.

Take a breath today and ask yourself:

Is your energy going toward what truly matters to you?
Or is it going toward meeting someone else's definition of success?

Reclaiming your narrative starts with noticing where you are today.

If you're feeling out of alignment or ready to re-anchor in what truly matters to you, reaching out for support is a strong first step. Learn more about working together by sending me a private message.

It’s easy to feel like time spent in grief, pain, or survival mode is time lost forever. Wounds that take years to heal can leave you feeling like valuable chapters were stolen from your life.

But healing isn’t about erasing those years—it’s about building a meaningful forward path with the strength, insight, and resilience you’ve gained along the way. Your capacity for peace, connection, and fulfillment hasn't expired, and lost time does not mean a lost future.

No matter how long you've been carrying the weight, your next chapter can still be grounded, strong, and entirely yours.

Brain: “But what if everything goes wrong?” 🫠
Also Brain: (Silence when asked what if everything goes perfectly right)

We are absolute pros at mapping out 14 different worst-case scenarios by 2:00 AM. Our brains will write entire movie scripts, complete with dramatic soundtracks, about things that haven’t even happened yet. 🎬

But what if we channeled that exact same creative energy into overthinking the best?

Instead of: "What if they hate my presentation and I forget all my words?"
Try: "What if I absolutely crush it, and they ask me to lead the next big project?" 🚀
Instead of: "What if this new step is a huge mistake?"
Try: "What if this is the exact turning point that changes my life for the better?" ✨

Your mind has a wild imagination—give it something beautiful to build today.

Drop a "🧠" in the comments if you needed this reminder today. What’s one best-case scenario you’re going to overthink this week? 👇

When was the last time you stepped entirely out of your comfort zone?

It’s easy to look at the challenges facing our community’s most vulnerable members from a distance. We see the statistics, we pass the shelters, and we might even offer a fleeting moment of sympathy.

But sympathy keeps us at arm's length.

If we want to build truly resilient communities, we need to bridge that gap. I challenge you this week to step outside your routine, visit your local Salvation Army or community shelter, and simply start a conversation with someone utilizing their services.

Our vulnerable population doesn’t need our sympathy. They need our compassion, our understanding, and most importantly, our active support.

When we sit down and listen to someone's story without judgment, two things happen:

We dismantle stigma: We start seeing the human being, not just the circumstance.

We offer dignity: True support begins with acknowledging that everyone deserves to be heard, seen, and valued.

Growth never happens in the places where we feel entirely safe and comfortable. Connection happens when we are willing to lean into the unfamiliar.

Take an hour this week. Listen, learn, and let a simple conversation change your perspective.

Every marriage starts with a beautiful wedding day, but the marriage you actually live in? That’s built in the quiet, ordinary moments that follow.

The truth is, a strong marriage isn’t something you just "find." It’s something you intentionally build, day by day, choice by choice. And the foundation depends entirely on the love you consistently give—not just when it's easy or romantic, but on the regular, mundane days.

It’s in:
The morning coffee poured for them before they even ask.
Choosing patience when you’re both exhausted.
Giving grace instead of keeping score.
Actively listening, even after a long day.

Love isn't just a feeling; it’s an action verb. The energy, kindness, and effort you pour into your spouse today is exactly what fuels your relationship for tomorrow.

You get out what you put in. ❤️✨
