"Dark have been my dreams of late" ~ King Theoden
In hindsight, Theoden could see the spell he'd been under, but not until he was freed from it. He'd been so destroyed by deception, he actually resisted being rescued. But others intervened. Friends could see he was being manipulated and when they spoke truth with power, the spell broke. The scales fell from his eyes, his composure returned, his thoughts were strong.
You might think a deceiver is easy to recognize. The slimy, repulsive one, creeping next to your ear, like Wormtongue. But what about the attractive one who uses charm and flattery and enough truth to seem trustworthy? Angel of light, wolf in sheep's clothing, servant of righteousness disguised...
Discernment recognizes truth.
You might know someone who's buried beneath lies. Someone who is blinded by deception. Pray they will be confronted with truth. When you've lived like Theoden, deceived then liberated, you long for others to find that freedom.
"Breathe the free air again, my friend" ~ Gandalf
