What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Kids
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that helps children understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It teaches children practical skills to manage worries, cope with difficult emotions, solve problems, and build confidence.
CBT helps children recognise that the way they think about a situation can affect how they feel and respond. For example, a child who thinks, “Nobody wants to play with me,” may feel sad or lonely and avoid joining others. CBT helps them explore other possibilities, such as, “Maybe my friends haven’t noticed me yet. I can ask if I can play.”
How does CBT help children?
* Managing anxiety: Learning strategies to cope with worries and fears.
* Understanding emotions: Identifying feelings such as anger, sadness, frustration, and excitement.
* Building confidence: Challenging negative thoughts and developing a more balanced outlook.
* Improving behaviour: Learning to pause, think, and choose helpful responses.
* Developing problem-solving skills: Finding healthy ways to manage challenges at home, school, and with friends.
* Building resilience: Learning that mistakes and setbacks are opportunities to grow.
CBT helps children practise more helpful thoughts and actions, even when difficult feelings are still present.
In summary: CBT empowers children with lifelong skills to understand themselves, manage their emotions, and face challenges with greater confidence. It can be adapted to a child's age and developmental needs, using play, stories, drawing, games, and practical exercises.
