I believe that God designed birth and motherhood to be pleasurable (I don’t mean pain-free!) and sacred. It is not something that we should go into filled with anxiety, fear, and insecurity. My goal as your doula is to help you enter motherhood filled with peace, joy, and confidence. Let’s work together to create a childbearing year that is aligned with how God uniquely designed YOU!

When making a meal for a postpartum mama whether she be a client, friend, or family I like to ensure that meal covers a couple very important bases.

1. It must be nutrient dense. That mama just spent 9 months growing a baby and now while she heals she is also feeding a baby. She needs lots of vitamins and minerals to help rebuild lost blood and depleted nutrient stores, balance hormones, and establish a milk supply.

2. It must be warm and easy to digest. Digesting cold food takes lots of energy. So does healing. Right after a mama has a baby it’s important to make sure her body is prioritizing healing. Ensuring what she’s eating is easily digestible and warm helps her body keep its priorities straight.

The kindest words from the most wonderful client, and now friend. From the very beginning the Lord was at work by bringing us together. It was a true privilege and honor to get to serve Cynthia and her husband as they prepared for and welcomed their third sweet child.

My first client gave birth this past Friday night.

Early Saturday morning as I drove my mom and sister to the airport, my mom asked me “So as the doula, what did you do?”

Over the past few months as I’ve been working through Hearthmother Journey, I’ve struggled a bit with this question. Like what would I tell someone if they asked me what a doula does? My default answer has been to explain that a doula is a support person. But for some reason I have felt like that answer just does not fully embody what a doula does. It’s not a wrong answer. It just didn’t sit right.

As I once again pondered that question, this time after operating in the role for the first time, my mind finally landed on an answer that I feel embodies the nuance that comes with the role of doula.

So, what does a doula do?
