Postpartum mental health requires more than asking, “How are you coping?”

The conversation around postpartum psychosis highlights why mental health training for healthcare providers matters.

Providers need to recognize the difference between typical postpartum adjustment, depression, anxiety, pOCD and a developing psychiatric emergency.

They may be the first person a mother tells about severe sleep disruption, frightening thoughts, confusion, paranoia or changes in behaviour.

Knowing what to look for and when to act can make all the difference.

We need healthcare providers who are trained to see the whole person, not just the pregnancy, birth or baby. People who can build relationships of trust and informed support.

Perinatal mental health is healthcare.

Training matters.

I recently attended The M Factor 2: Next Gen Impact Report to continue expanding my knowledge of perimenopause and menopause care.

The information for the report was gathered through womens lived experiences, surveys before and after the film screening, as well as research done in the field.

Every opportunity to learn helps me better support the women I work with who are navigating changes in mood, energy, identity, relationships, and overall wellbeing during this stage of life.

The insights and research shared will continue to strengthen my clinical toolkit and inform the care I provide, so clients feel seen, understood, and supported through every season of midlife.

Because women deserve answers, validation, and care that takes their experiences seriously.

Had a great day with handing out refreshments and snacks for the morning.
What an amazing event in Port Hope! An awesome turn out for the incredible entertainment and craft tents celebrating Pride in Northumberland County!
I can not wait to walk in the parade again next year!

Pride is not just a month; it is a reminder that living as your full self is an act of courage.
In therapy, I see every day how identity, safety, belonging, and mental health are deeply connected.
This month, we honour the LGBTQ2S+ community: the joy, the resistance, the history, and the ongoing fight for safety and dignity.
You deserve spaces where you are affirmed, respected, and supported and not just tolerated.

Today is International Day Against Transphobia, Homophobia, Biphobia. Take some time to educate yourself about actions you can take to end the hate. Speak out against phobic policies and social structures. Correct the mis-information that someone you know may be spreading. Be an ally.

We seek to serve all community members and provide a positive space for 2SLGBTQ+ people. Everyone is welcome at CHCN.

Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, Biphobia. The date of May 17th was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Despite the day being recognized in more than 130 countries, discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity are still tolerated - and sometimes enforced -by governments internationally. Please join us today in renewing our resolve to denounce these injustices.

I enjoyed enhancing my education and skills with this Somatics and Breathwork education workshop.
For clients that are struggling to "feel" their feelings, or get in touch with their deeper selves, Somatics is a great tool!

May 5 is Red Dress Day.
A national day of awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.
This is not history.
This is ongoing.
Behind every red dress is a life, a family, a story that matters.
Awareness matters.
But so does action, advocacy, and refusing to look away.

Getting some education on the Neuroscience of PMDD (PreMenstrual Dysphoric Disorder).
An important topic for anyone with a uterus that experiences these debilitating symptoms. Research is challenging old (mis)conceptions that this is a mental health disorder.
Hormones effect people that experience PMDD in such impactful ways, and SSRI's (the typical protocol for treatment), really can be ineffective.

Perimemopause can increase symptoms and I can see an increase in women feeling like absolute garbage (depressed, anxious, self-loathing, disassociating) during their luteal phase. But therapists aren't trained to ask about your menstrual cycle.

I am always inquiring and seeking what influences women's mental health, and that is why learning about PMDD is soooo important.
