Whether you have a little one starting grade school, a pre-teen navigating middle school changes, or a teenager facing high school pressure—back-to-school anxiety can affect the whole household.
This "back-to-school dread" looks different for every age. For younger kids, it might be tears and separation anxiety. For older kids, it often shows up as quiet withdrawal, irritability, changes in sleep, or stomach aches. As parents, we want to fix it quickly. But anxious minds of any age need to feel heard before they can calm down.
Here is how to help your kids prepare this week:
👧 For the Younger Kids: Validate before reassuring. Try saying, "I see this feels really big right now. We will figure it out together."
🧠For the Pre-Teens: Make the unknown predictable. Drive by the school, walk the route, and start adjusting to the school-year routine now to lower stress.
🎧 For the Teenagers: Offer a listening ear without immediately giving advice. Ask open-ended questions like, "What is the biggest thing on your mind about going back?"
If the transition still feels overwhelming for your family, you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Cobourg Counselling, we specialize in helping children, teens, and families build the emotional tools to manage anxiety, build confidence, and thrive
