When to hire a Doula?

I often get asked, when is a good time to hire a birth doula?

Answer is, anytime! If having doula support for labor and delivery is on your mind, its good to start preliminary conversations, interviews and signing of contracts when you are ready. Ive had clients contact me from the time they get a positive pregnancy test, up until 36 weeks!

What to keep in mind:
Most families like to wait until the start of second trimester for a few different reasons.
1) Their exhaustion and pregnancy sickness has calmed down.
2) They consider themselves in the “safe zone” after 13/14 weeks.

Also keeping in mind that doula packages also typically consists of 1-3 prenatal appointments. Those are usually done within the 2nd and 3rd trimester, and can build a good foundation and relationship before labor actually begins.

So when is a good time or contact a doula? When you are ready!

Some pros to hiring a Doula who is also your Massage Therapist is:

- We know what makes you tick and what makes you relax. Which in turn is very beneficial when you are in the thick of labor and need your nervous system to focus and relax a bit. When you are more calm, focused and able to relax certain muscles, labor can progress better. Certain muscles when they are held with tension, can also hold tension in the pelvic floor.

- Relationship building! Im an advocate for building relationships. If we are able to build a basic foundation of a relationship during your massage sessions, having my doula support may also feel more comfortable during labor and delivery with you being at your most vulnerable state. Having that said, not everyone needs that or would want that with a Doula, just a pro for some.
