Not everything your nervous system is responding to is trauma. And not everything needs to be “regulated.”
Especially in the female body, this distinction matters.
We are cyclical beings living in a culture that rewards consistency, output + overriding.
Two broad forms of stress worth discerning:
SURVIVAL STRESS — stress arising from how we’re living NOW:
→ overriding fatigue, hunger, desire + limits
→ chronic stimulation, urgency + responsibility
→ living out of sync with cyclical + natural rhythms
→ appeasing, performing + fitting in
→ suppressing anger, grief, desire + truth
→ managing ourselves instead of attuning to ourselves
Sometimes your nervous system isn’t asking you to process your childhood.
Sometimes your LIFE needs renegotiating.
TRAUMA STRESS — when the nervous system responds to the present through information shaped by the past:
→ threat that doesn’t match the present
→ repeating patterns we can’t seem to change
→ inability to speak, act or hold a boundary
→ disproportionate fear, collapse, appeasing or activation
→ old protection that no longer matches the moment
And there is crossover. Nothing in the body exists on an island. Present stress can activate old trauma; trauma can shape how we meet today.
The goal is NOT a perpetually calm woman.
It is a flexible, responsive, dynamic nervous system.
Rest AND mobilization.
Softness AND protection.
Receiving AND saying no.
Love AND rage.
The work is discernment.
Past or present? Trauma or survival stress—or both? What needs renegotiating internally? And what in my actual life needs to change?
This is the work inside The Somatic Way.
Not better management of the female body.
Greater fluency in her. ❤️🔥
