Self-Care Spotlight: Decluttering With Danita Townes!

When we think about self-care, we often think about rest, exercise, or mindfulness. But our physical environment can have a significant impact on how we feel, too.

A cluttered space can sometimes contribute to feelings of stress, overwhelm, decision fatigue, and difficulty focusing. Creating a more organized environment can help bring a greater sense of calm, clarity, and control to daily life.

Last year, Heather had the opportunity to work with Danita Townes, a professional de-clutterer whose compassionate, judgment-free approach made the process feel manageable and empowering.

Danita isn't a cleaner. She helps people sort through their belongings, decide what to keep, donate, or sell, and create practical systems that work for their lives. Most importantly, she works at your pace and supports you through the process without pressure or shame.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed by your space, remember that you don't have to tackle it alone. Sometimes asking for support is an act of self-care in itself.

Danita will be available in Grand Falls-Windsor in June and St. John's in July and August.

Canadian Mental Health Week May 4th –10th, 2026

This year’s theme is connection, encouraging Canadians to come together. Millions of Canadians report feeling lonely always or often. With youth reporting the highest rates of loneliness in Canada.

Connection doesn’t have to be big to be meaningful, It can look like:

• Calling a loved one
• Checking in with yourself and what you need
• Sharing a meal with a family member
• Starting a simple conversation

These small actions can remind us that we’re not alone, and those small, simple actions of connection can matter much more than we realize.

Taking care of your mental health can begin with connection, with others, and with yourself.

Do you find it easier to offer care, patience, and understanding to others…
than it is to give that same kindness to yourself?

Self-compassion isn't something that comes naturally for everyone, it's a skill that we have to build over time. Small shifts in how we speak to ourselves can make a big difference. Take a moment to ask yourself how you can be kinder to yourself, the first thought that comes to mind may lead you in the right direction.

stuck? we've got some ideas

- Speak to yourself the way you would a child; with kindness and compassion
- Let “good enough” be enough
- Allow yourself moments to rest
- Take a moment to celebrate your win, before moving on to a new goal

Tax season can be a big stressor ,especially for people with ADHD.

If you’ve been putting it off, avoiding it, or feeling overwhelmed by where to start, there’s nothing wrong with you.

These kinds of tasks rely heavily on self-regulation, not just effort.

Take it one small step at a time. That’s enough.

What is Happiness?

I recently stumbled upon an article by Ira Bedzow, Ph.D., (associate professor at the Emory University School of Medicine and the executive director of the Emory Purpose Project) on the Psychology Today Website. The article is about one of the first lessons he teaches his students about Happiness. Where he plays The Clip "Happiness" from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

If you feel like you're constantly chasing happiness the article is well worth the read, I've linked it at the end of this post.

A quote that stood out to me was "Happiness shouldn’t be conceived as a feeling one chases; it has to be seen as a way of being in the world."

This quote reminds us that happiness can live in small, meaningful moments. the things we care about, connect with, and find comfort in. It’s not always about reaching a goal, or striving for more but simply how we engage in the world around us.

Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that shift our whole day.

Autism Awareness Month is a reminder to keep learning but also to move beyond awareness into acceptance.

Acceptance means creating spaces where neurodivergent people feel respected, supported, and able to be themselves, not expected to fit into a single way of thinking or being.

At Healing Journey NL, we are committed to neurodivergent-affirming care that honours each person’s unique experiences, needs, and strengths.

April is Autism Acceptance Month! As part of our See Amazing in All Children initiative, we have developed new resources to help families discover, support, and share the amazing in all children. Learn more: https://m.sesame.org/autismresourcefb.
