Vital Balance Therapy

Vital Balance Therapy Sports Medicine Acupuncture, Manual Osteopathy, Neurokinetic Therapy This brings a unique perspective to Colin's practice.

Colin Harris is a 2000 graduate of a four year Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine program from the Shang Hai TCM College of BC, and is a Certified in Sports Medicine Acupuncture.Colin is also a Registered Nurse with a Masters in Nursing with acute care medical experience. Over the years Colin has continued to be influenced by Chinese Medicine philosophy and the principles of acupuncture

and the movement of energy, but he has moved away from the use of acupuncture needles to a more hands-on approach. Colin takes an holistic approach to the body using the principles of Acupuncture but with needless techniques and blends them with classical osteopathic techniques into manual therapy. Colin works with the relationship between energy and structure. This in turn influences the whole musculoskeletal system. Through integrated bodywork, Colin uses various modalities to address functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including often neglected areas such as our organs. Tension patterns from injuries, surgery, adhesions, illness, postural imbalances and other traumas have a cascade of effects for which our bodies must compensate. Through Colin's unique combination of modalities he provides an opportunity for change which encourages our own natural mechanisms to improve functional and structural balance, relieve the negative effects of stress and enhance mobility. Colin has a special interest in working with clients committed to ongoing improvement in structural balance, increased function and mobility and working through the layers of long-standing tension patterns.

Pain is often a miscommunication, not a verdict. 🧩

Your brain is constantly receiving input from your joints, muscles, and sensory systems. When those signals are outdated, inconsistent, or conflicting, it responds with protection: tension, restricted movement, pain.

At Vital Balance Therapy, we use neuro-response testing to decode those signals β€” identifying where the miscommunication is happening and resetting how your body interprets movement.

This is why people who've tried other physical therapies, massaging or joint manipulations without lasting results often find something different here. We work with the brain and its messaging not just the tissue. Also, don't forget that pain does not equal damage and damage does not equal pain. Let's discover what is really going on! That knot that keeps coming back no matter how much you foam roll it? It's not lazy tissue. It's a compensation. 😣

When a muscle is inhibited β€” meaning your brain has essentially turned it off β€” nearby muscles pick up the slack. They work overtime, stay chronically tight, and no amount of rolling or stretching changes that because the underlying imbalance hasn't been addressed.

We assess which muscles are overworking, identify the root cause of that pattern, and correct it β€” so your body stops doing the same thing on repeat.

Less guessing. More results. Share this with someone who's tired of chasing tension.

If you've been stretching the same tight spot for months with nothing to show for it β€” the problem probably isn't tightness. 🧩

Tightness is often a compensation. Muscle A is overworking and inhibited muscle B and muscle C compensates for the A-B dysfunction acting as a crutch for stability.

Your brain has told one muscle to overwork because something nearby isn't doing its job. Stretching the overworking muscle doesn't fix the underlying pattern β€” it just temporarily reduces the tension while the imbalance stays in place.

At Vital Balance Therapy, we use manual muscle testing and neuro-response testing to identify what's actually compensating and why, so we can treat the cause, not the symptom.

Let's clear up the confusion around the Square 1 System. πŸ”

It's not a strengthening program. It's not massage. And it's not about pushing through pain.

Square 1 is a neuro-corrective movement framework that identifies the specific joint positions and loads your brain has flagged as unsafe, and then systematically removes that threat response.

The result? Tension releases. Range of motion returns. Strength improves. Often within the same session.

If you've tried everything and still haven't found lasting relief, this may be the layer that's been missing. Once the brain feels safe then we might employ other techniques to increase motor recruitment of muscle fibres to increase strength using Functional Acupuncture techniques. Your injury healed months ago, so why does the pain still show up?

Here's something most people aren't told: your nervous system can keep signalling pain long after tissue has repaired. It perceived that a movement was dangerous, and it's still running that protective program.

Brain-based rehab works at that level β€” restoring your nervous system's confidence in movement, not just strengthening the muscle around it.

When your brain feels safe, your body lets go. Change the input, change the output! Save this if you've been stuck in recovery. πŸ”„

Most rehab skips the most important system in your body β€” your brain. 🧠

Muscles don't tighten on their own. Your brain sends that signal. And until we address why it's sending it, you'll keep chasing the same pain in circles instead of the real issue.

At Vital Balance Therapy, we test how your nervous system maps movement β€” not just where it hurts. That's how we find the real reason pain, weakness, or tightness keeps coming back. Remember, a tight muscle can either be overworking or underworking. How you treat each one is totally different.

This is what brain-based therapy looks like in practice. Book your assessment and find out what's actually driving your pain.

Rest might have been the advice 20-30 years ago. And don't even get me started on Ice. Maybe in the initial acute stage but not for chronic pain. We know more now.

After an acute injury, a brief period of relative rest makes sense. The tissue needs time to begin the healing process. But prolonged rest, the "just take it easy for a few weeks" approach, often makes chronic pain worse, not better.

Here's why. When you stop moving an area, the nervous system gets less sensory input from it. Less information means less certainty about how to coordinate that movement safely. The brain becomes increasingly cautious about that area and begins treating even normal movement as a potential threat. By the time you try to return to activity, the nervous system has reinforced that dysfunctional movement pattern or restriction even further.

Appropriate movement, done in a way that the nervous system can tolerate, is actually part of what resolves chronic pain. It sends the brain new, accurate information about that area. It demonstrates that the movement is manageable. Over time, the threat response decreases.

The goal isn't to push through pain. The goal is to find movements that are safe, build on them progressively, and give the nervous system enough positive input to update its threat assessment.

Movement is the medicine. The dosage just needs to be right. At Vital Balance Therapy we find what the nervous system needs!

Rehab fails when it treats the symptom and ignores the system that created it.

A tight muscle, a weak joint, a restricted movement pattern - none of these are random. They're decisions your nervous system has made in real time based on threat, past injury, sensory input, and perceived load tolerance. Your brain is protecting you. The problem is it can get stuck protecting you from threats that no longer exist.

Square 1 System works by identifying exactly where in your body the brain is perceiving movement as unsafe. Through precise sensory input to those specific joints and positions, it updates the nervous system's assessment. When the brain receives accurate information that a load or position is safe, the protection response decreases. Mobility returns. Strength improves. Pain reduces.

This is not stretching. It is not strengthening. It is not adjusting. It is recalibrating the system that controls all of those things. That's the layer most rehab approaches never reach, and it's why the same problems keep coming back. That's why we get results at Vital Balance Therapy.

That muscle you keep stretching? It might not actually be tight.

Tightness and weakness can feel identical from the inside perspective. A muscle that's neurologically inhibited, one that has been shut down by the nervous system as part of a compensation pattern, often presents as tight because the surrounding muscles are overworking to cover for it. You stretch the overworking muscle repeatedly. It releases temporarily, then tightens right back up. Also, stretching an inhibited muscle, you are unknowingly making it weaker.

This pattern is one of the most common reasons people get stuck in a cycle of temporary relief without lasting change. The tight muscle isn't the problem. It's the symptom of a motor control pattern the brain has locked in.

At Vital Balance Therapy, we test which muscles are actually firing and which have been neurologically inhibited, then address the compensation pattern at its source. When the inhibited muscle gets properly switched back on, the surrounding tension releases on its own.

Stop stretching the same spot and wondering why it keeps coming back. The answer is usually somewhere else entirely. We work with the brain and the nervous system. That's what controls everything. Lets get the whole system organized again and proper communication between brain and body.
