Families notice the drinking first. Or the pills. The missed calls.

By the time someone reaches that point, something else has been running underneath for years.

Depression nobody treated.

Anxiety they medicated themselves.

Trauma they never named.

Most programs separate these. Treat the addiction here, deal with the mental health later. But they didn't develop in isolation, and they won't heal in isolation.

Our residential programs at Dunham House treat both at once. The substance use and the mental health condition driving it.

One, three, or six months of integrated care in the Eastern Townships.

Today is International Dog Day.

At Dunham House, we see this unfold every week.

A resident, three days into the program , is sitting on the porch. He can’t sleep, can’t eat, and hates himself for being there. Then the dog comes over, rests its head on his knee, and stays.

No explanation is required.

When addiction and a mental health condition are both part of someone’s life, they may spend years controlling how others perceive them.

They keep acting “fine” until they no longer can.

Dogs don’t demand “fine.” They simply stay beside you.

Our residents say the animals reach them at moments when clinical support still hasn’t quite connected. The body settles before the mind does.

If someone you care about is dealing with both addiction and depression, anxiety, or PTSD, reach out.

If depression makes your body feel like concrete, that's not a character flaw.

Researchers at Washington University scanned 23,000 brains and found volume loss in the motor cortex of depressed people. The regions that control how you move shrank, independent of mood circuits. Your limbs feel like sandbags because the hardware changed.

For someone in dual diagnosis recovery, "push through it" becomes a demand your nervous system can't meet. You end up carrying shame on top of a neurological deficit.

Dunham House builds physical re-engagement into recovery from day one: yoga, an on-site gym, nature walks through the Eastern Townships.

We calibrate to where your motor cortex is now and build from there.

Your coworker started calling in sick on Mondays.

Your sister stopped returning calls.

You noticed and told yourself they hadn't fallen far enough to need treatment.

People die while families hold that belief.

Staff at Dunham House hear it on first calls every week, alongside "they should be able to quit on their own."

NIDA classifies substance use disorder as a chronic brain disorder. Early intervention gives the brain more healthy tissue to rebuild from. Waiting for a crisis hands the disorder more time to entrench.

We broke down five of these myths with the clinical research behind each: https://www.dunhamhouse.ca/blog/addiction-myths-recovery-misinformation

Call 450-263-3434. The conversation costs nothing.

These 5 addiction recovery myths delay treatment for thousands of Canadians. Dunham House clinicians explain the science and what families should know instead.

Let that sink in for a second.

Behind every one of those numbers is a real person sitting in their car before a shift, trying to hold it together.

Someone cancelling meetings because the anxiety is too loud.

A parent pretending everything's fine on a video call while falling apart inside.

The workplace can do real damage when it ignores mental health.

Toxic culture, impossible expectations, managers who confuse pressure with productivity. And when someone finally reaches their limit, stigma keeps them quiet. Nobody wants to be the one who "couldn't handle it."

We see this at Dunham House all the time.

People walk through our doors carrying years of workplace stress tangled up with substance use and mental health challenges they never had permission to address.

Recovery starts when someone feels safe enough to say "I need help" without losing everything.

If that's you, or someone you care about, know that asking for support is the bravest thing you'll do. Not the weakest.

The common areas at Dunham House have tall windows and soft seating. You'll find people reading in the mornings, talking over coffee in the afternoons. Nobody forces the social part. It happens because the room feels like a living room, not a waiting room.

We designed the facility around a simple idea: recovery asks different things of you at different hours of the day.

Sometimes you need people around. Sometimes you need a door you can close.

Both matter. We built for both.

Someone asked me yesterday: "What's the difference between healing and curing?"

Curing eliminates a problem. You take an antibiotic, the infection clears, you move on.

Healing works differently. You don't erase what happened. You learn to carry it without letting it run your life.

In dual diagnosis treatment, no clinician is trying to undo your past or pretend trauma didn't shape you. The work is about building a life where your experiences inform your choices instead of dictating them.

One of the moments that stays with me at Dunham House: a client in group said, "I spent years thinking something was broken in me. Turns out I needed support, not repair."

That shift changes how someone engages with their program. It changes how they talk to themselves at 2 a.m. when the old patterns pull hard.

Have you felt that difference between healing and curing, in your own life or in someone you love?

A new McGill study found something that should give all of us pause.

Gambling disorder treatment in Quebec is free and available, yet most people barely use it.

Researchers at McGill University and the Douglas Research Centre followed more than 2,300 people living with a gambling disorder over 13 years.

Despite having free access to specialized services, patients averaged fewer than two treatments across all those years.

For a condition the researchers describe as chronic for some people, comparable to substance-related disorders, that is a lot of people going without the sustained care they need.

Part of what stood out to us: people living with a co-occurring mental health condition were more likely to return for multiple treatments.

When someone is carrying both a gambling problem and anxiety, depression, or trauma, the mental health piece often takes priority, and the gambling can go unaddressed for years. The researchers also noted that gambling problems are less visible than substance use, so without screening, they slip under the radar.

This is exactly why we approach recovery the way we do at Dunham House. Addiction rarely travels alone, and treating one part while ignoring the other leaves people stuck.

Support for gambling concerns in Quebec is available anytime at aidejeu.ca or 1-800-461-0140.

Have you noticed how rarely we talk openly about gambling compared to other addictions?

You may have heard about Dunham House recently, on CTV News and in the Montreal Gazette.

Those stories show what happens here every day. On our 85 acres in the Eastern Townships, people work through addiction and mental health together, with real clinical care and the time it takes to do the work. For a lot of families, though, the cost of that care is out of reach.

That's where you come in.

As a registered Canadian charity, every gift helps us keep a place open for someone who couldn't otherwise walk through that door. Whatever you can give makes a difference, and it stays close to home.

Imagine running one of only four centers in Quebec equipped to help people facing addiction and mental health struggles at the same time, and being told the funding covers barely a third of what care actually costs.

That was the reality Dunham House shared with CTV News this weekend.

We're the only English-language center of the four, and right now 46 people are on our waitlist.

About 75% of the people we support come from Montreal, where English- and bilingual recovery resources are dangerously stretched thin.

We're proud of the work. We're also being honest about how hard it is to sustain it.

As our team put it to CTV, we're doing the job the system is supposed to do.

If you've ever wondered why access to recovery feels so hard to find, this is part of the answer.

Have you or someone you love ever struggled to find English-language mental health and recovery support in Quebec?

We'd like to hear about it. 💙
