Many families across British Columbia are receiving communication about the transition from Autism Funding to the new Children and Youth Disability Benefit.

For many parents and caregivers, this news may bring up anxiety, frustration, confusion, and a familiar feeling of having to prove needs that are already very real in daily life.

We recognize and understand how overwhelming it can be to gather years of reports, assessments, school documents, and clinical notes; especially when families are also trying to care for a child or youth with significant support needs.

What appears to be changing?

The Ministry of Children and Family Development has shared that current Autism Funding will remain available until March 31, 2027. The new Children and Youth Disability Benefit is expected to begin April 1, 2027, for children and youth who are determined to be eligible.

Climate anxiety is a term used to describe the difficult emotions people may experience in response to climate change and its impacts. For some, this can include worry, grief, helplessness, anger, or uncertainty about the future.

The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors is offering a public presentation on Climate Anxiety and Mental Health on June 23 from 7โ€“8 PM (Mountain Time). The session will explore what climate anxiety is, where it can come from, and practical strategies for supporting ourselves and others who may be impacted by climate-related distress.

This may be a helpful resource for individuals, parents, caregivers, educators, and community members who are noticing how climate concerns are affecting emotional well-being.

Presenter: Matt Treble, Registered Clinical Counsellor

Brain injury recovery is not always straightforward, and it is rarely one-size-fits-all. A recent University of Manitoba article highlights the work of Dr. Frederick Zeiler, whose research focuses on making traumatic brain injury treatment more personalized through real-time monitoring of the brain.

For clients and families, this is a helpful reminder that changes after a concussion, accident, or traumatic brain injury may involve more than willpower. Mood changes, fatigue, irritability, attention difficulties, stress sensitivity, and emotional regulation challenges can all be part of a brain and nervous system trying to recover.

Counselling does not replace medical care, but it can support recovery by helping people pace themselves, reduce shame, understand their nervous system, and build practical supports for daily life.

Mental health does not always need to start with a major life overhaul. Sometimes it begins with one small practice: pausing for a few minutes, noticing something good, reaching out to someone, going outside, or using one of your strengths in a more intentional way.

For June, we are sharing two free well-being calendars that offer simple daily prompts for reflection, connection, and positive mental health.

VIA Character Strengths Calendar

The VIA Character Strengths Calendar is rooted in positive psychology and focuses on using personal strengths in everyday life. Each day offers a small prompt connected to strengths such as curiosity, kindness, humour, fairness, love of learning, gratitude, and self-compassion.

This calendar can be a helpful way to notice what is already strong within you, rather than only focusing on what feels difficult or broken.

At Cosmos Counselling Clinic, care goes beyond the session itself.

We care for the heart and mind โ€” and sometimes that starts with something as simple as a snack, a juice box, or a bottle of water.

Therapy can take a lot of emotional energy, especially after school, work, or a long day. We want our space to feel welcoming, comfortable, and human.

Because being cared for includes your tummy too. ๐Ÿ’š

Parents often know when something feels different with their child. Bedtime becomes a battle. School suddenly feels impossible. Big emotions show up as meltdowns, aggression, defiance, withdrawal, stomach aches, headaches, or a child who just seems โ€œnot like themselves.โ€

A helpful reminder from this article is that childrenโ€™s behaviour is often communication. Young children do not always have the words to explain anxiety, sadness, stress, overwhelm, or fear. Instead, their inner world may come out through behaviour, play, art, or physical symptoms.

The article also explains why child therapy often looks different from adult therapy. Children may not sit down and talk through their feelings in a straight line. Instead, they often process emotions through play, creativity, storytelling, and symbolic expression. Play therapy, art therapy, and bibliotherapy can all help children safely express what they are feeling, build emotional awareness, and practise new ways of coping.

This video explores how small habits and consistent routines shape long-term wellbeing and success, even when progress feels slow. The speaker highlights that big goals are rarely achieved through motivation alone โ€” they are built through repeated daily actions that align with values. Small improvements compound over time, creating momentum and strengthening confidence. The message encourages viewers to focus less on dramatic change and more on steady, meaningful choices that support growth. Rather than being overwhelmed by whatโ€™s ahead, it suggests leaning into actions within your control and recognizing that consistency, not intensity, sustains progress and wellbeing.
