Parkinson's & The Power of "Big" Movement

💥 Parkinson’s Disease & ParticipACTION: Go BIG This June! 💥

Did you know that physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to slow the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms? When participating in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge this month, our number one tip for our PD warriors is to focus on amplitude—or "BIG" movements.

Parkinson’s can cause movements to become small, hesitant, and quiet. When you are out for your daily walks, gardening, or doing home exercises this week, try these three simple cues:
1️⃣ Swing those arms: Exaggerate your arm swing as you walk.
2️⃣ Stomp with intention: Lift your knees slightly higher to prevent shuffling.
3️⃣ Open those hands: Spread your fingers wide during upper-body tasks.

Every big step you take helps retrain brain pathways AND logs valuable minutes for our community challenge! Need help designing a safe, high-amplitude exercise program? Our specialized neuro-physios are here for you.

Launching the ParticipACTION Challenge

🇨🇦 Cranbrook & Kimberley, let’s get moving! June 1st marks the official kickoff of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, and NeuroAlign is all in! This month, communities across Canada are competing for the title of "Canada’s Most Active Community"—and every single minute of movement counts toward our local score.

At NeuroAlign, we know that "being active" looks completely different for everyone. If you are living with a neurological condition like MS, Parkinson's, or recovering from a stroke, your movement matters just as much. Whether it’s a 5-minute seated mobility routine, a supported walk down the hall, or a targeted balance session with your physio, it ALL counts!

Let's show Canada how active the Kootenays can be. Ready to track your minutes? Visit participaction.com to log your movement, or tell us in the comments: How are you moving today? 👇

☀️ Navigating MS in the Summer Heat: Quick Tips for Staying Cool

As the beautiful East Kootenay summer rolls around, the rising temperatures can bring a hidden challenge for those living with Multiple Sclerosis. Many people with MS experience Uhthoff’s phenomenon—a temporary worsening of neurological symptoms (like fatigue, blurred vision, or balance issues) when body temperature rises even by a fraction of a degree.

If the heat hits you hard, you aren't imagining it, and you don't have to stay trapped inside all summer! Here are a few quick tips to help protect your nervous system:

💧 Pre-Cool and Hydrate: Drink ice water before going outside. It helps keep your core internal temperature down proactively.
🧣 Invest in Cooling Gear: Simple tools like wearable neck cooling wraps, ice vests, or even misting fans can make outdoor community events much more manageable.
⏱️ Time Your Outings: Plan your garden walks or errands for early morning or late evening when the sun is less intense.

Exercise as Neuro-Restoration

Exercise is more than just "fitness"—for the MS community, it is medicine.

Moving your body helps:

- to build "functional reserve" in the brain.

- to improve balance and reduce fall risks.

- to maintain the connection between your brain and your muscles.

Whether you are using a mobility aid or are newly diagnosed, movement is a powerful tool for neuro-restoration.

Let’s build a stronger connection between your brain and body. 📍 Schedule your visit with Neuroalign Physio. Visit www.neuroalignphysio.ca to book.

Client Tip: Focus on "functional" movements. Practice the "Sit-to-Stand" (rising from a chair without using your hands) 5–10 times a day. This builds the specific leg and core strength needed for daily independence!

The Unpredictability of Symptoms

One of the hardest parts of MS is that it is unpredictable. Because it can affect the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, symptoms range from vision changes and tingling to mobility and balance challenges. No two days—and no two people—are the same, which can make planning your week or your life feel like a moving target. You might feel strong on Monday but struggle to lift your foot by Wednesday, leading to a frustrating sense of loss of control. Recognizing that this variability is a feature of the condition, not a failure of your effort, is a huge step in the emotional journey of MS.

💡 Rehab Tip: Keep a symptom diary. Tracking your "ups and downs" alongside your activity levels helps us identify triggers and tailor your exercises to your specific patterns.

Don't wait for a flare-up. Proactive care at NeuroAlign provides you with a toolkit to manage the "bad days" more effectively.

Managing MS Fatigue (The "Invisible" Symptom)

Did you know that up to 80% of people living with MS experience fatigue? Unlike the "tiredness" everyone feels after a long day, MS fatigue can be sudden and overwhelming. According to MS Canada, managing fatigue requires a "multi-dimensional" approach.

Strategies include:

Energy Conservation: Pacing your day and "banking" your energy for what matters most.

Temperature Control: Using cooling vests or air conditioning, as even a slight rise in body temperature can trigger fatigue.

Professional Support: Occupational and Physical therapy can help you find tools and movement patterns that save energy.

You don’t have to push through the exhaustion alone. We can help you build a personalized energy-management plan!

Ready to reclaim your energy? 🗓️ Book your assessment with NeuroAlign Physiotherapy today at www.neuroalignphysio.ca

Client Tip: Try the "4 Ps" of energy conservation: Prioritize your tasks, Plan your schedule, Pace your movements, and Position yourself comfortably (like sitting while prepping dinner) to save fuel for the things you love.

What is MS? (The Protective Barrier)

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system where the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the protective covering of your nerves. Think of myelin like the insulation on an electrical wire; when it’s damaged, the messages between your brain and body get "static" or blocked. Over time, this damage can lead to "sclerosis," or scar tissue, which can permanently alter how your nervous system functions. This is why you might feel like your limbs aren't quite "listening" to your brain's commands. By understanding that your body is navigating a communication breakdown, we can focus our therapy on finding the clearest "signal" possible.

💡 Rehab Tip: At NeuroAlign, our focus is on neuroplasticity. While some pathways are damaged, your brain has an amazing ability to find "work-arounds." Consistent, repetitive movement helps strengthen these new connections.

Early intervention is key! Starting physio early helps preserve these pathways before significant scarring occurs. Book with NeuroAlign today at www.neuroalignphysio.ca
