Healing Hooves Animal Assisted Therapy Animal and Equine assisted counselling, professional training, children's books, parenting resources & personal growth

Healing Hooves is an Equine and Animal Assisted Therapy program, based in Alberta, Canada. We have been working in the field for over 25 years! We provide trauma informed and attachment based counselling services within a natural setting with the option of incorporating horses, donkeys, dogs, cats, ducks and chickens into sessions. We have a team of four (two legged!) counsellors all of whom are professionally accredited in the mental health field with additional training in equine and animal facilitated work and trauma informed approached including EMDR. Our animal partners are highly respected members of our team who do this work because they want to and are allowed time off and retirement when they ask for this too! Our services are reimburseable under most health plans. We also provide parent consulting, professional training, mentoring/ supervision, personal growth workshops, therapeutic stories and resources for professionals and caregivers. Trainings are available in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Scotland and online and can lead to internationally recognised certification. For Professionals, when you work with Healing Hooves you join a community of professionals dedicated to a journey of ongoing growth in partnership with animals and nature. We meet you where you are now, honouring the unique experiences and skills – with people and with animals – you already possess, and we share a β€˜map’ for applying and growing your experiences and skills within the Equine and Animal Assisted Services and Wellness field. Our approach is insight based and adaptable and is firmly grounded in both the discernments of science, research and professionalism AND in the wisdom of nature and our animals. This often means slowing down, looking deeper and allowing more space – all of which we have learned to do best in the company of our animals! Sue McIntosh MA CCC, founder of Healing Hooves and lead counsellor, is a licensed coach with Equestrian Canada, a Certified Canadian Counsellor and is certified through Pro-EFW as a practitioner, mentor and trainer in Equine Facilitated Wellness. Sue also has additional training and credentials in Animal Assisted Therapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Therapeutic riding. Sue has also worked closely with Gordon Neufeld for close to 20 years and is certified by the Neufeld Institute as a practitioner and facilitator.

Reflections from Explorations Training by Celina Hjarta-Mi

"My biggest β€œAha” moment was the realization that Scope of Practice is a sanctuary, not a cage. I previously viewed professional boundaries as a set of limitations, but I now see them as the protective framework that allows both the facilitator and the animal to show up authentically and safely. Defining what I don’t do has ironically given me much more freedom to lean into what I do best: neuro-affirming, relationally-driven wellness.

My greatest learning from this course was the concept of Context-Building as a non-negotiable first step. Learning to prioritize β€œbeing” and attunement before β€œdoing” a task has completely reframed my understanding of the human-animal bond. It moves the horse from a β€œtool for a task” to a sentient kin with the agency to say β€œno,” which is the only foundation upon which true healing can occur.

This course has fundamentally shifted my relationship with Slowing Down. As someone managing my own ADHD and chronic pain, I’ve often felt the pressure to perform or β€œproduce” results. This training has given me the β€œprofessional permission” to honor my own sensory needs and energy levels as a form of somatic modeling for my clients. By slowing down and listening to my animals’ β€œno,” I am learning to listen to my own β€œno” as well, moving toward a β€œpower-with” relationship with myself, my horses, and my future practice."

Celina Hjarta-Mi is a Certification Candidate training with Sue McIntosh at Healing Hooves in Alberta.

β€˜Clever Hans’ has typically served as a precautionary tale, warning against the dangers of anthropomorphism and of overestimating non-human animals’ cognitive abilities.

But what if our limitations – rather than Hans’– have been the problem? What if Hans was in fact exceedingly β€˜clever’ and his trainer, Wilhem von Osten, a gifted trainer?

To consider this, we humans must look beyond an anthropocentric worldview to consider equine abilities from perspectives that fit with their evolutionary journey and species’ needs, rather than our own.

If you’re not familiar with the story of Clever Hans here it is in a nutshell. In the late 1800’s von Osten, a school teacher, decided to teach his horse, Hans, math. Hans demonstrated his intelligence to amazed audiences by tapping his foot to provide the correct answers to complex math questions. However, investigations ultimately showed that Hans only knew the right answer when von Osten did, and was in fact responding to extremely subtle, likely unintentional, cues in von Osten’s body language.

This discovery prompted important steps forward in scientific procedure to control unintentional influence from experimenters on research results, aka β€˜the clever Hans effect’. Sadly, it also contributed to the many decades when researchers avoided studying the possibility of animal intelligence or sentience, or suffered a lack of funding and the ridicule of their peers if they were brave enough to do it anyway.

So where did we go wrong?

While von Osten correctly believed Hans to be clever, the problem is he – like most of us – defined β€˜clever’ in human terms, and then tested it in a non-human. This would be rather like assessing my intelligence by testing my echolocation skills.

Because why would a horse need to know math? Will math help him find forage or water? Identify the approach of a potential predator and run to safety? Navigate complex social cues and relationships within his herd?

Evolution tells us a species will develop the abilities needed for that species to survive. Humans evolved as meat eaters who can’t run particularly fast or defend ourselves without tools, so we needed to plan and strategise in order to eat and not be eaten. This meant the gradual development of complex cognitive abilities, supported by multiple parts and systems within the brain including a highly granular dorso-lateral pre frontal cortex.

Equines, on the other hand, evolved in herds eating grass (which doesn’t hide or run away) on the open plains and were hunted by many species, including us. Thus they developed excellent senses and memories for finding forage and water, acute senses and the physicality to detect and flee from predators, and finely tuned abilities to notice and respond to subtle shifts in others’ body language.

Hans didn’t – couldn’t – know the answer to von Osten’s math questions but he noticed, understood and responded accurately and consistently to subtle cues in his trainer’s body language.

Precisely as evolution intended.

How does this apply within Equine Assisted Services (EAS)?

This narrative holds many lessons for those of us committed to creating living and working environments that prioritise our equines’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

Such a fun afternoon with Finn and friends and then sharing some equine neuroscience with a wonderful group of pony clubbers at Thompson Country Pony Club

It was also so heartwarming to discover that little Cinnamon, a mini pony my kids and I rescued from an auction almost 20 years ago and then rehomed to a family in RMH, ended up being loved for life by Katy's amazing children!

Plus I got to meet a 7 year old who knew about the pre frontal cortex, the amygdala and the hippocampus - that doesn't happen every day!

Thank you Katy and Kelly for the invite and warm welcome!
