Not all sleep issues are actually sleep issues. 👶💤

Sometimes frequent waking is linked to feeding challenges like inefficient latching and milk transfer, hunger, reflux, food sensitivities, discomfort, or simply a strong need to suckle for comfort and regulation.

Before attempting sleep training, it can be worth exploring what normal infant sleep actually looks like and what your baby might be communicating to you through those eating and sleeping rhythms. 💜

People with small breasts/chests often worry about if they will make enough milk for their baby.

But your body knows what to do during pregnancy to prepare for lactation!

And if you want to rule out risk factors and prepare and make a lactation plan, you'll have higher chances by working with an IBCLC prenatally or taking a prenatal lactation class.

Head to the link in my bio to see the options I have available for working with me!

Chat GPT can't fully understand the context of your feeding struggles.

It can't see how your baby is positioned and attached, or if they are swallowing frequently enough.

It can't watch your baby on a bottle and know if that teat is working well for them.

It can't understand your baby's behaviour in between feeds and what it might mean.

It can't do a functional exam of your baby's sucking patterns.

It can't tell if your baby is holding tension or has low tone - and what type of bodywork might help.

It can't do a breast exam.

It can't understand the context of your living situation and how to manage infant feeding within that.

These are things only an IBCLC can do. Hands on, personalized support that fits the unique needs of you and your baby will give you the best care possible.

Avoid the 3AM rabbit hole and book your 2 hour consult in home or office at brimfamilycare.com.

Best paired with a prenatal lactation class or consult 😉

A baby coughing, sputtering, clicking, leaking milk, pulling on and off, or seeming overwhelmed at the breast is often blamed on a “strong let-down.”

And yes, sometimes flow is part of the picture.

But sometimes what you’re actually seeing is a baby struggling to manage normal milk flow because of oral dysfunction.

When babies can’t maintain an effective seal, stabilize their tongue well, or coordinate sucking and swallowing efficiently, feeding can start to look chaotic fast. And parents are often told the problem is “too much milk” instead of asking why the baby is having trouble managing it.

This is why feeding assessments need to look at function, not just symptoms.

Because treating a breastfeeding problem like a milk supply problem when it’s actually an oral function problem can leave you feeling stuck for months.

Breastfeeding shouldn’t feel like a battle every feed.

I know it's hard and that you really need better sleep. But sleep isn't something your baby learns and it isn't a milestone.

It's biologically normal and protective to wake at night. And it's a natural progression that is supported best by your closeness and responsiveness.

Knowing the difference between what is normal and not normal can help you find better strategies and coping tools.

Let's find the root cause of your sleep troubles!
