From Bursary Recipient to Med Student
Three years ago, Nathan Cromwell-Tesfazion was the recipient of a Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation renewable scholarship for an African Nova Scotian student entering a healthcare field, with generous funding from the J & W Murphy Foundation.
Now, after finishing his undergrad degree, Nathan is about to enter Dalhousie Medical School with plans to become a family doctor.
“Even right now I get emotional thinking about it, it’s been a lifelong dream for me,” he said.
Nathan attended this year’s bursary celebration at Dartmouth General, where he met 17-year-old Shanique McFarland, the 2026 recipient of the $8000 renewable scholarship. She begins her studies in the fall with plans to become a respiratory therapist.
"I feel happy because I'm being recognized for my achievements and I feel really appreciated by everyone here," Shanique said.
