From Bursary Recipient to Med Student

Three years ago, Nathan Cromwell-Tesfazion was the recipient of a Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation renewable scholarship for an African Nova Scotian student entering a healthcare field, with generous funding from the J & W Murphy Foundation.

Now, after finishing his undergrad degree, Nathan is about to enter Dalhousie Medical School with plans to become a family doctor.

“Even right now I get emotional thinking about it, it’s been a lifelong dream for me,” he said.

Nathan attended this year’s bursary celebration at Dartmouth General, where he met 17-year-old Shanique McFarland, the 2026 recipient of the $8000 renewable scholarship. She begins her studies in the fall with plans to become a respiratory therapist.

"I feel happy because I'm being recognized for my achievements and I feel really appreciated by everyone here," Shanique said.

Thank you to Gloria McCluskey, for your incredible support of Dartmouth General Hospital for 50 years! In fact, we found the guestbook from the DGH opening celebration on January 14th, 1977, and Gloria was the third person to sign it while serving on the inaugural Hospital board.

This week it was a pleasure to welcome Gloria to the Roger and Lindsey King Dining Hall at DGH for a series of interviews for her program Destination Dartmouth on Eastlink. The upcoming episodes will feature Dr. Jhase Sniderman, Dr. Kevin Spencer, Physician Assistant Erin Sephton and DGH Foundation President and CEO Stephen Harding.

Gloria, thank you for your decades of dedication to Dartmouth General Hospital and your unwavering commitment to the Dartmouth community. We are grateful for all you have done, and continue to do, to support and celebrate DGH!

CONGRATULATIONS to this year’s recipients of Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation bursaries for African Nova Scotian students entering a health-related field!

A generous donation from the J & W Murphy Foundation provides $8000 per year for up to four years for a student entering healthcare studies. This year’s recipient is 17-year-old Shanique McFarland from Lockview High School, who begins her studies in the fall at Dalhousie with hopes of becoming a respiratory therapist.

There is also a $2000 bursary provided to a student in each Dartmouth-area high school. The recipients for this year were Chidinma Akunyili from Woodlawn High School, Michshiya Hill from Auburn Drive High School, Ariana Carmel Johnson from Dartmouth High School, Salama Mwamba from Ecole Secondaire Mosaique and Jordan James from Cole Harbour High School.

The donors who make the bursary programs possible, along with the J & W Murphy Foundation, are John and Heather Fitzpatrick, BoyneClarke, Dr. Jonathan Enright, Senator Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard and other generous donors throughout the community.

Every year an African Nova Scotian leader is recognized for having had a positive impact on healthcare in our province. This year’s honouree is retired Registered Nurse and respected community leader Rose Fraser.

THANK YOU to the recipients and their families, donors, DGH leaders and past bursary winners who joined together for a very special celebration at Dartmouth General, and best wishes to the graduates!

Dartmouth General Hospital gastroenterologist Dr. Chad Williams has become a familiar face as part of a recent campaign to encourage people to complete their F***l Immunochemical Test (FIT) for colon cancer screening. Dr. Williams spoke at a recent panel discussion with DGH physicians that happened in the atrium of the hospital’s Neville J. Gilfoy Wing as part of our Donor Wall unveiling event.

“Just above us here, on the 3rd floor of this wing, we have our own patient department where we do our endoscopies. And there’s a room there devoted to colon cancer screening. Monday through Friday, that’s what we do all day in that room. There is no other room like that in Nova Scotia. That was something that was equipped using donations from the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation donors that are sitting here. So that was fantastic, and we’ve been able to utilize that to its fullest. We’re doing high volume, quality work with that. Within Central Zone, actually within the province, we do the lion’s share of colon cancer screening right here at Dartmouth General Hospital. We’re really proud of that.”

“My senses started eventually coming back, my family was there, and I knew this was serious, that I could have died.”

Ed Mury is reflecting back three years to May of 2023, when a medical incident brought him to the Dartmouth General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit for several days.

“My wife Maureen saved my life, but they cared for me and brought me back,” he says. "I said thank you a hundred times, but it didn’t feel like enough.”

Since that time, Ed has been participating in DGH fundraising events, including the upcoming Golf Classic on September 14th at Brightwood Golf and Country Club. The lifelong Dartmouth resident and his wife, Maureen, also plan on giving the gift of their time. They are scheduled to begin volunteering at Dartmouth General in the fall.

“Maureen was a music teacher for 32 years, so she’s going to play piano and is very much into music therapy,” Ed says. “I just want to give back and support in any way I can. I received great care. And I will continue as long as I can to help the hospital here.”
