Going to the doctor can be scary for kids.

Teddy Bear Clinics, an initiative started by Dalhousie Medical School students Miriam John and Sherry Eskander, aims to change that and is helping kids ease their jitters and spark curiosity about medical visits and procedures🧸🩺

A team of 30 med student volunteers have hosted Teddy Bear Clinics for more than 300 children at community centres and schools across Halifax.

The kids rotate through fun, play-based stations that feature real medical equipment to learn about check-ups, vaccines, casts, X-rays, MRIs and much more.

“[The clinics] help to familiarize children with healthcare equipment in a safe and fun setting, teaching them what the objects are and what they do,” says Ms. John.

“Our vaccination station was especially educational, with simple vaccine education followed by hands-on play where kids could practise giving their teddies and peers “vaccines” with needle-free syringes and vials of water.”

Nova Scotia is taking targeted action to enhance breast screening, menopause care, gynecology and other services for women while strengthening co-ordination of women’s healthcare across the system.

That includes:
- a strategic push to increase access to breast screening services and reduce wait times
- the new Menopause Centre of Excellence in Spryfield, expected to open this winter
- a new Women’s Health Research and Innovation Grant to support new ideas to improve care for women, with an initial focus on menopause care
- an education co-ordinator to help improve understanding of menopause among health providers, educators and the public.

A new Women’s Health Summit will hold its first meeting this fall and will bring together community organizations, advocates, patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders to help shape future priorities. The government is also creating the provincial Women’s Health Clinical Collaborative and a dedicated Women’s Health Program within the Department of Health and Wellness.

The Women's Health Clinical Collaborative will develop a road map for a more co-ordinated, efficient and sustainable women’s health system. It will include representatives from Nova Scotia Health, IWK Health and the Department of Health and Wellness.

The Women's Health Program and Women’s Health Clinical Collaborative will provide stronger provincial leadership, oversight and accountability for women’s health initiatives and system planning.

🩺 Heart valve problems can sometimes be found during a stethoscope check, when a healthcare professional listens to your heart and hears a murmur. A murmur doesn’t always mean there’s a problem, but it may mean more tests are needed.

Drop by Sunnyside Mall in Bedford on Friday, Sept. 18 for a free stethoscope check from a healthcare professional and learn more about heart valve disease.

❤ This event is part of Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week, September 14 to 20, and aims to promote the importance of early detection to protect heart health in older adults.

Participants will:
- build meaningful relationships and strengthen peer networks with colleagues
- explore strategies for fostering a sense of belonging, resilience, and wellness while navigating a new practice and community environment.

🚨Hey, med students: Doctors Nova Scotia is here to support your medical education! 📚🩺

The DNS Medical Student Bursary Program provides bursaries for Dalhousie Medical School students in Halifax and Sydney, and francophone Nova Scotian students studying medicine at Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick and Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec.

There are EIGHT $5,000 bursaries available for med students. Students in any year of study may apply for this support to help fund their medical education and associated expenses. Doctors Nova Scotia is committed to supporting diversity and inclusion within the medical community.

All recipients will be selected based on need, community involvement and dedication to the medical field. Students from equity-deserving communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
