HPV, and the cancers it causes, doesn’t discriminate. Are you eligible for the vaccine?

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine eligibility criteria in Nova Scotia has recently been updated.

Youth are eligible to receive the HPV vaccine for free up until their 21st birthday. The vaccine is also recommended for Two-Spirit, transgender people, and men who have s*x with men, who are eligible for the free vaccine until they turn 46.

The HPV vaccine protects against nine strains (types) of HPV and which may cause up to:
• 92% of cervical cancers
• 75% of a**l cancers
• 57% of pe**le cancers
• 72% of vaginal cancers
• 25% of head and neck cancers
• 90% of ge***al warts

Mi’kmaq and Indigenous healthcare leaders are calling for real action, in the form of authentic relationships with reciprocity, trust and accountability when it comes to reconciliation.

Their powerful message landed with force during Walking Together: A Conversation on Mi’kmaw and Indigenous Wellness, Relationships and Reconciliation in Health Care, a virtual National Indigenous History Month event.

Nova Scotia Health is developing a provincial smudge and ceremony policy. Panelists shared the need for concrete, accountable change that uplifts Mi’kmaq and Indigenous voices and combats bias.

“We’ve done things a certain way for so long. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and comfortable doing things differently,” said Department of Health and Wellness Mi’kmaq and Indigenous senior strategist Naomi Pierrard.
