Last month, Healthy Pictou County hosted the inaugural Aberdeen Medical Staff Physician Awards Gala at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre in Pictou.

Physicians gathered to celebrate their colleagues and honour the meaningful impact they make every day for patients and medical learners in the community.

Dr. Whitney Lum won the Healthy Pictou Country Welcoming Award, Dr. Oseme Eriakha won Family Physician of the Year, Dr. Austyn Burkholder won the Rising Star in Medicine award, Dr. Deb Straub won the Community Champion award, Dr. Andrew Neufeld won the Innovation in Medicine award, Dr. Doug Neal won the Outstanding Preceptor award, Dr. Changulanda Joshi won the Specialist award and Dr. Mahsa Ghoreishi was recognized with the Lifelong Learning in Medicine award.

Emancipation Day – August 1

Emancipation Day is a time to remember and honour the abolition of slavery across the British Empire on August 1, 1834. It is a day to reflect on the resilience, strength, and contributions of African Nova Scotians and Black Canadians, while recognizing that the journey toward equity and justice continues.

Join us as communities across Canada commemorate Emancipation Day through ceremonies, cultural celebrations, educational events, and moments of reflection.

🎥 The Provincial Flag Raising Ceremony (July 31) and the Provincial Emancipation Day Ceremony (August 1) on the Halifax Waterfront will be live streamed. Also join us Crescendo Fest HFX for a live evening concert on August 1st.

August 1st marks Emancipation Day, a day to learn about and reflect on the contributions of people of African descent to Nova Scotia’s development, while recognizing the continuing legacies of historical enslavement and anti-Black racism.
