Cats are masters at hiding pain. In the wild, showing weakness could make them vulnerable to predators, so they instinctively mask signs of illness or injury.

Subtle changes like hiding more often, decreased appetite, sleeping more, avoiding jumps, or changes in grooming may be the only clues that something is wrong.

🚨 Pyometra: A Life-Threatening Emergency

Did you know that an unspayed female dog or cat can develop pyometra, a serious and potentially fatal infection of the uterus?

The first picture is typical cat uterus, the second is a pyometra.

Pyometra can occur in females of any age, although the risk increases as they get older and experience more heat cycles.

⚠️ Signs to watch for include:
• Increased thirst and urination
• Lethargy or weakness
• Decreased appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Abdominal enlargement or discomfort
• Vaginal discharge — but discharge may be absent in some cases

Pyometra can progress rapidly and become life-threatening. Treatment typically requires emergency surgery, along with supportive care.

❤️ The good news? Pyometra is preventable. Spaying your dog or cat eliminates the risk of pyometra and also provides other important health benefits.

If your unspayed pet is showing any of these signs, contact your veterinarian promptly.

🌺Happy 6th work anniversary to one of wonderful technicians Ellen.
Her calm demeanor, compassion, and expertise have made her an outstanding supervisor for our veterinary assistants. 🌺

A few fun facts about Ellen:

💙What’s one case that has really stayed with you? We had a Bernese dog with a splenic hemangiosarcoma, which is essentially cancer on the spleen that needed to be removed by surgery. This patient was in critical condition so the anesthesia was very involved and there was also a lot of blood loss during the procedure. The mass was about 4lbs and he lost 2 liters of blood. The patient then needed a blood transfusion after surgery. These cases that are very involved and fast paced tend to stay with me!

🦷What type of case or procedure do you most enjoy working on? I enjoy dentals and monitor anesthesia on critical patients. It used to give me a lot of anxiety but with experience over the years I've started to enjoy working in these critical situations. Especially since all of our vets are very knowledgeable, which makes these stressful situations not so bad.

🦠What do you wish more people knew about the work you do? I wish more people knew how important vaccines are for puppies, especially for the parvovirus that is very prevalent up here! There is a lot of work put into keeping these puppy’s alive and comfortable when it is constantly vomiting, having diarrhea, or doing both. The smell is absolutely foul when you are confined in a small room. You are constantly disinfecting and gowning up when you enter isolation to not spread the virus around the clinic. We give fluids and medications to replenish all the water it's losing through the vomit and diarrhea, and hopefully we can make the puppy a little less nauseous so it will eat. It sucks watching them suffer when there is an easily preventable solution with a vaccine. There is a lot of misinformation out there, but we will gladly answer any questions you may have!

Not always. For many double-coated breeds, including Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, the coat actually helps insulate against heat and protects the skin from harmful UV rays.

Shaving these breeds can increase their risk of:
☀️ Sunburn
🌡️ Overheating
🐕 Coat damage as it grows back

Instead:
✔️ Brush out loose undercoat regularly.
✔️ Keep plenty of fresh water available.
✔️ Avoid the hottest part of the day.
✔️ Provide shade and air conditioning whenever possible.

⚠️URGENT MESSAGE⚠️

If your puppy or young dog is sick and we’ve asked you to call us from the parking lot when you arrive PLEASE STAY IN your vehicle until we have given you the ok to come into the clinic. These measures help reduce the spread of diseases like PARVO that is a highly contagious virus.

This is typically a disease of puppies and young dogs and can be fatal if untreated. Usually the affected dog will become lethargic, start vomiting, stop eating, and eventually develop bloody diarrhea.
Please make sure your puppy or young dog’s vaccines are up to date and that exposure to public areas is limited until the vaccine series is complete.
If you are unsure of your puppies vaccine status or if your pup develops these symptoms please contact your veterinarian.

Spaying and neutering your pets is an important part of responsible pet care and can have lifelong health and behavioural benefits.

✨ Spaying females can:
• Prevent unwanted litters
• Prevent potentially life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra)
• Greatly reduce the risk of mammary cancer when performed at an appropriate age

✨ Neutering males can:
• Prevent unwanted litters
• Eliminate the risk of testicular cancer
• Reduce roaming, urine marking and some hormone-driven behaviours

🐶🐱 Every pet is unique! The ideal age to spay or neuter can depend on your pet’s species, breed, size and individual health. Talk to your veterinarian about what’s best for your pet!

It might be, but don't assume hot weather is the only reason.

Some cats eat a little less during the summer, but drinking significantly more water while eating very little is not something to ignore.

Excessive thirst can be an early sign of serious medical conditions like:
💧 Kidney disease
💧 Diabetes
💧 Hyperthyroidism

Cats also shouldn't go long without eating. Even 24–48 hours without enough food can put them at risk for a dangerous liver condition called hepatic lipidosis.

If your cat's appetite has dropped, they're drinking much more than usual, or they're acting differently, it's time to schedule an exam. Have questions? Give us a call at 250-782-5616.
