It seems obvious to share a picture of this plant, this week for Eating Disorser Awareness Week (edaw2026). It was gifted to me to show the purple color associated with eating disorder awareness and the hope of recovery. 💕

I just love how this purple shamrock looks like a butterfly, which to me also signifies change and growth 🩷

This video discusses some of the key differences between dieting versus an eating disorder.

Myth: Only people who are underweight have eating disorders and if your weight is in the normal range or above, you are not as sick

Fact: The opposite is actually true. Only about 6% of eating disorder sufferers are considered clinically “underweight” (Flament et al., 2015). Having a weight that is in the normal range or above does not mean the person is less sick or has lower distress and interference in their daily life due to their eating disorder. Serious medical complications can occur with any of the eating disorders, regardless of weight. Perpetuating this idea that only people who are emaciated can be really sick can lead to sufferers and families delaying treatment because they don't feel or believe they are "sick enough".

** I posted this years ago on the NB eating disorser network for EDAW week but am reposting because I think it's still a misconception today and it goes in line with this year's campaign: "health doesn't have a look"

"Health doesn't have a look" is the theme of EDAW this year. This video is about reflecting on how we can change the behaviors that encourage and promote the idea that weight loss and thinner always means healthier.

Eating Disorders can lead to serious medical
complications. Early detection and treatment are key to minimizing and reversing
some of these risks. See below for a few of the complications.

There are many medical complications associated with but not everyone "feels" them. Some people do; for example, some may experience dizziness upon standing or may see "black spots" (this can be due to orthostatic changes in blood pressure and/or heart rate due to gravitational shifts when changing position from lying to standing). This is not normal!

Other medical complications include bradycardia (low heart rate), and hypotension (low blood pressure). But some people might have these medical complications and never even know! You can also have a life-threatening low potassium level from vomiting, laxatives or diuretic use, and also not "feel" it.

Some may say they "feel fine."
If there are medical parameters indicating that your body is not functioning well, it could be that you are just not paying close enough attention, or that you lived this way for so long you don't know what "feeling better" feels like.

There are also very serious cases where there are no obvious medical abnormalities (yet). You may go to the doctor and "things look good" for now. This doesn't mean you are not damaging your body. Some bodies just respond differently. Over time, eating disorders cause a variety of issues that effect many different body systems. The harm caused from the eating disorder, both physically and emotionally, cannot be underestimated.

Seeing a medical provider with eating disorder expertise is so important to help you sort through what's going on with your body.
