Why is it called a blue nevus? 💙

No, it’s not called blue because it’s feeling lonely! 😉

A blue nevus gets its characteristic color because of where the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) are located within the skin. In a blue nevus, these cells are found deep in the dermis. As light passes through the skin, the deeper melanin appears blue rather than brown—a phenomenon known as the Tyndall effect.

In contrast, the melanocytes in most common moles (nevi) are located more superficially, which is why they appear brown.

Blue nevi are benign lesions and, in most cases, do not require treatment. However, they should always be assessed carefully with dermoscopy to confirm the diagnosis and distinguish them from other pigmented lesions, including melanoma, which can occasionally mimic their appearance.

🔍 Every pigmented lesion deserves a thoughtful evaluation—not every blue spot is a blue nevus.

Pourquoi l’appelle-t-on un nævus bleu? 💙

Perioral dermatitis is not an allergy. It is an inflammatory skin condition that can be triggered by occlusive or greasy creams, certain cosmetics, toothpaste ingredients, or an overgrowth of Demodex mites, which normally live on our skin.

One of the most common mistakes is applying cortisone (steroid) creams. While they may seem to improve the rash temporarily, they often make it worse over time and can lead to persistent flare-ups.

Perioral dermatitis may also cause a burning or stinging sensation, not just redness and bumps.

This patient had been applying mometasone cream because the rash wasn’t improving. Unfortunately, the steroid was actually fueling the condition, causing it to worsen rather than heal.

The right diagnosis is key—what looks like eczema or an allergic reaction may require a completely different treatment approach.

This was a xanthoma, a benign lesion caused by lipid accumulation in the skin. While it appeared clinically benign, a few details made me pause: it had developed recently, appeared after a skin injury, and grew rapidly.

On dermoscopy, some features also raised enough concern that I felt it was prudent to remove the lesion and send it for pathology to rule out a Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare but aggressive form of skin cancer.

This photo was taken just a few days after the procedure, so the wound was still in the early stages of healing.

Clinical history, dermoscopy, and need for pathology analysis all play an essential role in choosing the right and safest treatment

This is a seborrheic keratosis, a very common benign skin growth. It was located on my patient’s cheek, and her goal was simple: have it removed while minimizing the risk of a visible scar.

What made this case interesting was the journey she went through before arriving at my clinic.

She first saw a very experienced private dermatologist, who reassured her that the lesion was benign but felt that, because of its size and cosmetically sensitive location, a referral to a plastic surgeon was the best option.

The plastic surgeon was willing to remove it, but the proposed treatment was surgical excision with pathology analysis. The patient was concerned about having an incision on her face and continued looking for other options.

She then visited a family physician in the public system, who referred her to a dermatologist. Unfortunately, the estimated wait time was between 2 and 6 months.

Feeling discouraged, she turned to an AI search engine—which happened to recommend my clinic.

After assessing the lesion, we treated it with a laser-based approach. She is now healing well, and we’re very happy with her progress.

Her story is more common than many people realize. Even in Canada’s second-largest metropolitan area, navigating the healthcare system for a benign skin lesion can sometimes be a long and frustrating process.

Every lesion deserves an individualized assessment, and not every treatment is appropriate for every patient. The best approach depends on the diagnosis, location, size, cosmetic considerations, and the patient’s goals.

Not every lump in the armpit is the same. An axillary lump may simply be a benign cyst, but it can also represent an enlarged lymph node, a lipoma (a benign fatty lump), or—more importantly—hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). HS is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the apocrine (sweat) glands. It causes painful, recurrent nodules and abscesses that can eventually lead to permanent scarring if left untreated. Making the correct diagnosis is essential because the treatment is very different. While a cyst may require surgical excision, hidradenitis suppurativa is often managed with medications to reduce flare-ups, and when surgery is needed, a deroofing procedure is frequently preferred over complete excision.

When evaluating an armpit lump, details matter:

• When did it appear?
• Where exactly is it located?
• How often does it recur?
• Is there pain, drainage, fever, or other associated symptoms?

Although both cysts and hidradenitis can become inflamed, distinguishing between them is key to choosing the right treatment and preventing unnecessary procedures.

If you have recurrent painful lumps in your armpits, don’t assume they’re “just cysts.” An accurate diagnosis can make all the difference.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are one of the most effective treatments for atrophic acne scars and improving overall skin texture. Their effectiveness is often underestimated.

Yes, TCA peels involve some downtime, but for the right patient, the results are often well worth the healing process. By stimulating collagen remodeling and improving scar depth over time, TCA peels remain one of the most powerful tools in acne scar treatment.

Beautiful skin isn’t built overnight—it’s built with the right treatment plan and patience.

Some things have nothing to do with fashion—they have everything to do with feeling comfortable in your own skin.

For some faces, fuller lips beautifully enhance their natural features and create better facial harmony. While thinner lips may be trending, beauty is never one-size-fits-all.

The most flattering results aren’t about following trends—they’re about respecting each person’s unique anatomy and enhancing what already makes them beautiful. 💋✨

🇨🇦 Happy Canada Day! 🍁

July 1st is a day to celebrate what makes Canada so unique: diversity, multiculturalism, and the many cultures that come together to call this country home.

For some, today is about spending time with loved ones. For others, it’s Moving Day—a uniquely Quebec tradition! 📦🏡

And for one of my patients, today was the perfect opportunity to invest in herself with a liquid BBL. Because self-care and confidence are always worth celebrating.

However you spend your Canada Day, I hope it’s filled with happiness, new beginnings, and reasons to smile.

Happy Canada Day! ❤️🤍

🇨🇦 Bonne fête du Canada! 🍁

I’m not just a skin expert—I’m a skin nerd. And I’ll tell you something bluntly:

You won’t find scientific evidence that sunscreen causes skin cancer. On the other hand, there is overwhelming evidence that UV radiation causes skin cancer. That’s an established fact.

The DNA damage caused by UV rays is irreversible, but it is also largely preventable. It affects every skin type, regardless of how fair or dark your skin is.

Preventing skin cancer is simple:
☀️ Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.
🧢 Use protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
🌳 Seek shade, especially during peak UV hours.
🔍 Have your skin checked regularly if you notice any changing spots.

Protect your skin today—your future self will thank you.
