I like to give each shroud a name that reflects its vibe/origins. For this one, I would lean into the blue flowers used to eco-print the silk ties.

When I first began learning about green burial, I discovered something that surprised me.

Most people don’t know it’s an option.

Most people prefer a more muted shade for a shroud but there are those who like to make a statement.

I don’t make many of the brighter ones but I will if someone asks (this one is for a client).

Do you prefer muted or vibrant colours?

I may use one dye batch for more than one shroud to maximize time and output.

However, very rarely can I match exact dye colours as time, concentration, heat and fabric prep can all influence the outcome.

Every shroud is literally one-of-a-kind.

Before dyeing, I’ll sometimes fold, gather, or bind the fabric by hand. It changes the way the colour settles into the cloth — creating softer movement, variation, and areas that feel less controlled. I’ve always been drawn to that natural irregularity. It gives each piece its own character.

This shroud combines black walnut and madder. Together, they create deep browns and warm red undertones.

Both dyes are known for their strength and longevity. Colours that feel grounded and close to the earth.
