Personal support workers or PSWs, provide essential, direct care—from supporting people in their homes, in hospital and in long term care .
May 19 marks Personal Support Worker (PSW) Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of PSWs. Through their compassion, dedication and hands-on care, PSWs support individuals with a wide range of temporary and ongoing health needs – making a meaningful difference in the daily lives of residents and patients.
Dede Ikeri, a PSW at St. Mary’s Health, made a life-changing difference in the life of client Barb Quarry. After repeated hospital visits due to chronic pain, Quarry was able to recover safely at home with daily PSW support from Ikeri through the 21-day hospital-to-home program, led by St. Mary's Health.
Ikeri supported Quarry’s recovery by managing her daily routines, encouraging mobility and providing consistent, compassionate care that helped her regain her independence.
“We treat our clients like our family. It’s our responsibility to take care of them and provide quality care with respect and dignity,” says Ikeri.
“Building a trusting relationship with clients and their families is a big part of a PSW’s role. How you communicate care plans and connect with clients helps them understand the end goal. You’re there to help them regain their independence.”
For Quarry, one of the most meaningful parts of the experience was knowing she wasn’t alone.
“The biggest thing was feeling like I was part of a team,” she explained. “I didn’t have to take on all the responsibility because there were professionals there to help me.”
On this PSW Day, we thank and celebrate PSWs like Ikeri for the exceptional, compassionate care they provide every day.
