This week at Summer Forest Camp was full of big ideas and adventures.

From building a fish trap and working out plans for a boat that really floats to exploring the trails along the creek, fishing around the pond, hangouts in the hammock, and some pretty epic mud fights, it was such a fun week with this group!

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “What is Forest & Nature School?”

Forest & Nature School is a child-led, play-based educational approach that takes place in natural spaces, where children build a relationship with nature through regular and repeated visits.

Children are given uninterrupted time to play and the freedom to become deeply engaged in their ideas. Small group sizes allow meaningful relationships and a strong sense of community to grow, creating an environment where children can explore, take appropriate risks, and follow their own curiosity.

Every Forest School day looks a little different, but these are the principles that guide our time together.

Rainy Day Adventures! 🌧️

The last couple of days were spent splashing in puddles, building an obstacle course for the beetles, making friends with the worms, enjoying snack under the tarp, mixing and creating with watercolours and noticing how different the creek looked after the rain!

Every day is a new adventure at Through the Woods Forest & Nature School!

Each morning begins with a conversation about where the group would like to play and from there the day unfolds based on the unique interests, ideas and curiosities of the children. Some days are spent at the pond fishing, climbing and checking in on the local birds. Other days are spent exploring along the creek, creating art, catching bugs and swinging in the hammocks.

One of the beautiful things about child led play is that no two days ever look the same. Plans change, new interests emerge and the day often heads in completely unexpected directions. Giving children opportunities to follow their ideas, make choices and become deeply engaged in their play leads to so many wonderful moments of discovery, connection and growth and that’s where the best adventures really begin.

Spaces still open to join this Friday!!

Through the Woods Forest & Nature School is offering Spring PD Day Camps for children ages 5 to 12.

Days will be spent entirely outdoors, guided by the interests of each group. Every day is a chance for children to follow their ideas, get a little muddy, and enjoy being outside with time and space to play.

Activities may include:
• Nature art
• Bug catching
• Fishing in the creek
• Swinging in the hammocks

Dates:
May 15
June 5

Time: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Location: Lions West Valley Park (across from the Ricochet Aquatic Centre)
Cost: $40 per day

Come spend the next PD day playing and exploring in nature.

Registration is open.

Through the Woods Forest & Nature School is offering Spring PD Day Camps for children ages 5 to 12.
