One of the questions I hear all the time is: “Am I too young for this to be perimenopause?”
For many women, the answer isn’t as straightforward as they expected.
The menopause transition typically happens over several years, and understanding the terminology can make it easier to recognize where you may be in that process.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
➡️ Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. It can begin years before your final menstrual period, which means some women may start noticing changes earlier than they expected.
➡️ Menopause is reached once you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, when there isn’t another medical or physiological reason for it.
➡️ Postmenopause refers to the years after menopause.
The average age of menopause is around 51, but there is a range of what can be considered typical. Your experience won’t necessarily look exactly like your sister’s, your friend’s, or what you’ve read online.
And age is only one piece of the picture.
Changes in your cycle, sleep, mood, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal or urinary symptoms, and other health changes may all be worth discussing with a healthcare professional if something feels different.
There are also situations where using your menstrual period to determine menopause isn’t straightforward — including after certain surgeries, treatments, or procedures. I’ll be talking more about that next.
If you’re noticing changes and wondering, “Could this actually be perimenopause?” you don’t have to figure it out based on a timeline alone.
