How Does Childhood Influence Substance Use?

Our childhood experiences help shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. For some people, experiences like neglect, abuse, family conflict, instability, or growing up around substance use can increase the risk of developing substance use challenges later in life.

These experiences are often referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Research has shown that as the number of ACEs increases, so does the likelihood of struggling with mental health concerns and substance use. But it’s important to remember:

💜 Risk does not equal destiny.

Many people who experience childhood adversity never develop a substance use disorder. Likewise, people can develop substance use challenges without experiencing significant childhood trauma. There is never one single cause.

Protective factors—such as supportive adults, healthy relationships, safe communities, and access to mental health care—can make a tremendous difference. Healing is possible at any stage of life.

If you or someone you love is struggling, know that hope and support are available.

Recovery Isn’t a Straight Line—And That’s Okay💜

Many people wonder why recovery from substance use can be so difficult.

The truth is that substance use disorders are considered chronic, treatable health conditions. Like diabetes, asthma, or high blood pressure, recovery often requires ongoing care, support, and lifestyle changes. A return to substance use (sometimes called a relapse or resuming use) doesn’t mean treatment has failed—it means additional support may be needed.

Research shows that the first few months after treatment can be especially challenging. During this time, people may face stress, cravings, relationship changes, mental health struggles, housing instability, or financial pressures. Without strong supports, these challenges can increase the risk of returning to substance use.

The good news? Recovery is absolutely possible.

People who have access to safe housing, supportive relationships, counselling, peer support, meaningful work, and community resources are more likely to build lasting recovery. Every day, thousands of Canadians continue to live healthy, fulfilling lives in recovery.

💜 Recovery is possible.
💜 Every journey looks different.
💜 Every step forward matters.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Substance Use

When we talk about addressing substance use, it's easy to think there is only one solution. In reality, supporting individuals and communities requires a range of approaches that meet people where they are in their journey.

Here are some of the key stages:

🧠 1. Prevention & Education
The first step is helping people make informed decisions. This includes educating youth and adults about the risks of substance use, building healthy coping skills, and encouraging positive mental health before substance use becomes a concern.

📖 2. Early Intervention
Recognizing the signs early and connecting someone with support can make a significant difference. This might include conversations with trusted adults, counselling, or referrals to community resources before substance use becomes more severe.

🤝 3. Harm Reduction
Not everyone is ready or able to stop using substances immediately. Harm reduction focuses on reducing the risks associated with substance use while helping keep people alive, healthy, and connected to services. For many, this is an important step toward future recovery.

🏥 4. Treatment & Recovery
Treatment looks different for everyone. It may include withdrawal management (detox), residential or outpatient treatment, counselling, medication, peer support, or a combination of services. Recovery is personal, and there is no single path that works for everyone.

💜 5. Ongoing Recovery & Community Support
Recovery doesn't end when treatment does. Stable housing, employment, supportive relationships, mental health care, and community connections all play important roles in maintaining long-term wellness.

Why does this matter?

No two people experience substance use the same way. Some benefit most from education and prevention, while others need immediate treatment or ongoing recovery supports. Every stage plays an important role in building healthier individuals, families, and communities.

Supporting one stage doesn't mean ignoring another—it means recognizing that people have different needs at different times.

Substance Use in Adolescence

Adolescence is a time of growth, exploration, and change. As teens develop, they're also more likely to take risks, be influenced by peers, and seek new experiences. While experimentation can be a normal part of development, substance use during these years can have lasting effects.

The adolescent brain is still developing until the mid-20s, particularly the areas responsible for:
🧠 Decision-making
🧠 Impulse control
🧠 Planning ahead
🧠 Emotional regulation

Because of this, young people may be more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol and other substances.

It's also important to recognize that substance use isn't always about curiosity or peer pressure. Some youth may use substances to cope with:
💜 Stress or anxiety
💜 Depression or loneliness
💜 Trauma
💜 Family conflict
💜 Bullying
💜 Feeling disconnected or unsupported

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with this young person?" we can ask, "What might they be going through?"

Parents, caregivers, educators, and trusted adults play an important role by creating safe spaces for open, honest conversations. Listening without judgment and offering support can make a significant difference.

Early intervention, education, and compassionate support can help young people make healthy choices and access help when they need it.

💜 Every young person deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported.

Understanding the Link Between Houselessness and Substance Use

When people think about houselessness and substance use, it's common to assume that one always causes the other. In reality, the relationship is much more complex.

Substance use can contribute to houselessness for some individuals by affecting finances, employment, or relationships. At the same time, experiencing houselessness can increase the risk of substance use as people cope with trauma, chronic stress, isolation, or the challenges of living without stable housing.

It's also important to remember:

💜 Not everyone experiencing houselessness uses substances.
💜 Not everyone who uses substances experiences houselessness.
💜 Many people face both challenges because of underlying factors such as mental health concerns, domestic violence, job loss, family breakdown, or a lack of affordable housing.

These experiences are often interconnected, not isolated.

Reducing stigma begins with understanding that every person's story is different. Compassion, accessible support services, affordable housing, healthcare, and community connections all play important roles in helping people build stability and move toward recovery—whatever that journey looks like for them.

💜 Together, we can build a community that responds with understanding instead of assumptions.

What's happening with substance use services through Recovery Alberta?

Recovery Alberta has identified substance use care as one of its priority areas. This includes efforts to improve access to a range of services for Albertans, such as:

💜 Prevention and education
💜 Harm reduction initiatives
💜 Withdrawal management (detox) services
💜 Treatment and recovery programs
💜 Mental health supports that address co-occurring concerns
💜 Recovery-oriented care that aims to meet people where they are in their journey

Recovery looks different for everyone. Some individuals may seek abstinence-based treatment, while others may benefit from harm reduction services, counselling, peer support, or a combination of approaches. There is no one-size-fits-all path.

Substance use can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. Reducing stigma and increasing understanding helps create communities where people feel safer reaching out for support.

This post is intended for educational purposes only and is not a reflection of All Are Daughters' programming or services.
