Words matter.

Every nurse brings valuable knowledge, skill and clinical judgement to Ontario’s healthcare system. In a new letter to the editor, WeRPN CEO Lori Singh, RPN, speaks out against recent coverage that has described Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) as ‘less skilled’ or ‘lesser trained.’ Those descriptions do not reflect the education, expertise or professionalism of Ontario’s RPNs, nor the vital role they play in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

“Words matter. When we describe one group of healthcare professionals as ‘lesser,’ we do more than diminish the contributions of a profession—we risk undermining public confidence in the qualified nurses providing care at the bedside,” says Singh.

The distinction between nursing designations is not one of quality, but of role. Ontario needs the full expertise of RPNs to build stronger healthcare teams and ensure patients receive the right care, from the right nurse, at the right time.

Trauma survivors don't share their story for "attention." Most of the "attention" most survivors have ever received for speaking out has been profoundly negative.

If they're taking the risk to share their story, they're doing so hoping it can connect them with care, not "likes."

Pinned Statement: Why Groves Care Speaks

Locally, Groves Care Clinic & Academy uses Facebook as our current public landing place for sharing our intentions, ethical stance, partnership interests, solution-focused action-taking and development work.

We encourage collaborative participation that brings a perspective of grassroots growing an entity together while it's principals take accountability.

We are not here to perform controversy. We are here because endangerment happens when a coerced silence protects unsafe atmospheres.

Groves Care speaks when public issues affect dignity, safety, access to care, disability, equity-seeking groups, family stability, occupational health, rural service gaps, clinical ethics, and community belonging.

We believe constructive dialogue matters, especially when people disagree. We also believe there is a difference of significance between disagreement and harm.

Everyone can be loud. Loudness is not the threat.

The threat begins when people use false labels, public shaming, rumours, intimidation, discrimination, or reputational harm to make others feel unsafe, unwelcome, discredited, or disposable. Unbelievable.

Angels hover. Fools tread. Angles attune us. PRISM resumes. Groves Care stands for human-centred community development across the life cycle:

Individual, family, organization, and community. Our work includes psychotherapy, addictions care, trauma recovery, occupational mental health, family dialogue, rehabilitation planning, training, consultation, documentation standards, and rural capacity-building.

We are building flat and forward from a limited demo-project toward a clinic and academy model that supports clients, clinicians, trainees, families, partners, and system builders. Our website is currently aimed at partnership recruitment and for public information. Our digital clinic entry is a customized development through our selective onboarding to Telus Health CHR. More formal clinic systems, billing pathways, collaboration tools, and referral routes will launch as our home-grown infrastructure matures.

Our intention is simple: Build what is missing, protect what matters, and serve people who too often fall through cracks that were never properly mapped.

We/ology mapped the needs, interests, and most viable mitigation amd prevention strategy: Few disregard what we propose.

We will enter difficult public conversations when our perspective may help clarify harm, reduce stigma, support access, or invite better systems. We will not debate personal attacks, mocking labels, anonymous allegations, or false public personas in comment threads.

Legal, medical, occupational, regulatory, and accommodation matters belong in appropriate forums. Facebook is not a courtroom, clinic record, grievance file, or regulatory hearing.

But Facebook can be a doorway.

PREVENTION is RELAPSE RESILIENCE holistically curated for distributed delivery.

It can be a place where people learn what we stand for, why we speak, what we are building, and who may wish to collaborate.

Groves Care is interested in partners who care about rural access, ethical service design, family stability, clinician sustainability, interdisciplinary care, disability and safety accommodation, equity, and practical system repair.

Standing for what is right is not always popular. Sometimes it creates risk. Slanted views. Uninformed or misguided perspectives. We accept that courage is part of ethical work.

We do not ask everyone to agree with us.

We do ask that people tell the truth, stay accountable, and stop confusing mockery with evidence.

A reflection from Groves Care NW Ontario

A post from a Northwestern Ontario “rant and rave” page came randomly into our business feed this week.

We did not go looking for it.

What we found left us shocked.

The post concerned the Township of Emo’s challenge to a Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario decision involving Borderland Pride. The public comments beneath it were not merely disagreement about law, municipal procedure, flags, or public spending. Many comments revealed something more troubling: Open contempt toward people whose identities do not fit narrow either/or assumptions about gender, sexuality, belonging, + public presence.

That matters.

A Pride flag does not force belief. It does not erase anyone else. It does not require personal celebration from every resident. It signals that people who have historically been pushed into silence, exile, invisibility, and fear are part of the community too.

In small communities, symbols matter because isolation is not abstract. Everyone knows everyone. Rumour travels faster than evidence. Difference is noticed. People who are gay, gender-fluid, Two-Spirit, trans, q***r, questioning, or otherwise gender differentiated often learn early how safety depends on reading rooms, managing disclosure, shrinking expression, and deciding when visibility is worth the risk.

That is not healthy community life.

Healthy communities do not require sameness. They require enough maturity to make room for difference without treating difference as contamination, ideology, provocation, or moral threat.

This is not about taking sides in a culture war. It is about occupational safety, community health, human dignity, and lawful public governance.

Ontario human-rights protections are not fringe politics. They are part of the civic architecture within which workplaces, municipalities, service providers, professional associations, and public institutions operate. Sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are protected grounds. People do not lose their right to dignity because their identity discomforts or their politics disrupt.

As a clinician, I see the harm created by rigid either/or thinking every day. People are not well-served by being trapped inside false opposites: Normal or abnormal, acceptable or unacceptable, male or female, strong or weak, visible or silent, belonging or exile.

Human development is more nuanced.

Many live in spaces between fixed categories. Some live there quietly. Some visibly. Some name it. Some do not. Some carry family, cultural, spiritual, biological, psychological, social, occupational, and historical layers that cannot be reduced to a slogan.

I know something of that space.

My name in Ojibway Mnjikaning dialect, as I understand and carry it, is Wikpiizhaakin Kwe, Rainbow Woman. I was named by a Sweat Lodge conductor through adoption rite into Waawaskaasi, the Deer Clan. Each clinical Elder, every grassroots Elder healer gave me a distinct name and a distinct clan. TOTEM: As someone deidentified for adoption who has lived much of life with no secure family or community protection, I understand naming, clan, symbol, and belonging as more than identity display. They can be protection. They can be orientation. They can be medicine.

That does not mean every person must broadcast every identity. Privacy is also dignity.

But when public discourse says, “keep that to yourself,” “do not flaunt it,” "it is not a badge of honor ", or “we do not want that here,” it is no longer asking for privacy. It is demanding disappearance. Annihilation anxiety kills!

That is the line.

Groves Care supports restorative education over humiliation. We support lawful governance over reactive culture-war performance. We support community development that brings people into better understanding rather than leaving them to harden inside inherited fear.

But we will not pretend harmful assumptions are harmless simply because they are familiar.

Northwestern Ontario knows what it means to paddle against upstream currents. Our towns, First Nations, rural communities, resource communities, workers, families, elders, youth, and service providers all know what it means to be overlooked by distant systems. We cannot afford to waste our strength turning on one another over the visibility of people who have always been here.

Many identities.

One human community.

The task is not to erase difference.

It is to become mature enough to make room.
