🎉 We are pleased to welcome Matthew Tran to the Lockyer Optometry team for the Fall of 2026! He is a 4th-year optometry student from the University of Waterloo that will be providing optometric care and services under the supervision of Dr. Brian and Suzanne Lockyer. Matthew was born and raised in North York and has completed his bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences at York University. In his free time, he enjoys bicycling, illustrating, and exploring novel cuisines. Please give Matthew a warm welcome to Dryden! 👋

Is your child ready to start school? ✏️ All children should have a yearly eye exam which is covered with a valid OHIP card! The “Eye See…Eye Learn” Program provides children born in 2021 or 2022 with a free pair of glasses, should they require them 🤓

We ❤️ sharing great news! This investment marks an important step forward in improving access to retinal ophthalmology services to residents across Northwestern Ontario. 😊

Until recently, patients in Northwestern Ontario experiencing simple retinal detachment faced urgent trips to Winnipeg or Southern Ontario for treatment. The long journeys and the requirement of patients to travel by car after treatment were made even more difficult by winter highway conditions.

Now, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) can perform simple retinal detachment repair locally.

This important advancement means patients can receive timely care closer to home, reducing travel burdens, and helping protect vision when every moment counts.

This achievement was made possible through the collaboration of Dr. Alex Pisig, TBRHSC ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon, the TBRHSC Lions Vision Care Centre team, Hospital administration, and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, whose donor-funded surgical gas canisters helped bring this service to Northwestern Ontario.

“I want to help people here so they don’t have to travel to Winnipeg or elsewhere – especially in winter,” said Dr. Pisig.

The first patient to receive the treatment in Thunder Bay, Bob Campbell, was extremely grateful to Dr. Pisig and everyone who made it possible to receive this treatment locally.

“Without Dr. Pisig and those first gas canisters the Foundation funded two weeks earlier, I would have had to drive to Winnipeg and back,” Campbell said. "Thank you to everyone involved in expanding access to specialized care and improving patient experiences across our region."

After more than 10 years of service, we completed our final day in Sioux Lookout on April 30, 2026. As we packed everything up, we took time to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished together over the past decade.

We were honoured to provide thousands of eye exams to patients of all ages from Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Lac Seul, and communities across the Far North. We delivered more than 500 clinic days without ever cancelling a single one due to weather or highway closures .. even when it meant taking the back roads to get there!

We are deeply grateful to our amazing support staff. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment made this satellite office possible, and we could not have done it without them.

Our goal has always been to make a positive difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Thank you for your trust, support, and loyalty throughout the years. It has truly been a privilege to be part of your care.

While this chapter in Sioux Lookout has come to a close, our story is far from over. We look forward to continuing to serve you at our Dryden office for many years to come.
